Oversee the accurate release of information functions of the Health Information Management Department, including requests for records from patients, providers, attorneys, governmental agencies, and other internal and external customers. Respond to subpoenas in accordance with state and federal privacy and confidentiality rules and laws; review requests to ensure HIPAA-compliance; return non-compliant requests to the requestor with authorization requirements. Provide notary public services for hospital record releases as required. Perform general office duties including answering telephones and assisting walk-in customers with release of information requests. Prepare records for Peer Review; submit reports to the Death and Suicide Registry. Order supplies for the department and record/minute take for departmental monthly meetings. Perform all HIM Specialist 1 and 2 duties as applicable. Qualifications
General office skills including typing and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel); effective, professional communication with internal and external customers; attention to detail. Type 40 wpm; thorough knowledge of state and federal release of information rules and laws, with specific knowledge of HIPAA requirements for patient privacy and confidentiality; ability to interpret and apply HIPAA regulations regarding Release of Information. Ability to read and understand patient record documentation; decision-making and critical-thinking skills; ability to work independently. License/Certification: Notary public or obtain Notary public within six months of hire. Education and Experience
Associates degree required or equivalent (two years or more of direct/relevant experience); Medical Terminology class to be completed after date of hire; RHIT or RHIA certification preferred. One year of previous experience in Health Information Department preferred; general office practices/computer applications; professional communication, multitasking, and excellent customer service skills. Physical Demands and Work Environment
Position involves standing, walking, stooping; occasional carrying and lifting of lightweight materials (up to 20 pounds). May be required to sit for extended periods; visual acuity and depth perception to recognize words and numbers; hand/finger dexterity to use a computer keyboard and office equipment. Must be able to work in an office environment with typical office noise and equipment. Additional Details
