Department of Transportation Job Description and Duties

Under the general supervision of an Information Technology Manager I, the IT Associate serves as a Systems Administrator in the Server Infrastructure and Identity Access Management Section of the Infrastructure Management Division. The incumbent is based in the Sacramento Headquarters office and provides statewide support, leadership and expertise for Caltrans business units. MAJOR FUNCTIONS: The incumbent works collaboratively with management and staff to provide the administrative and technical support for servers, server infrastructure, physical and virtual server compute environments. The incumbent performs complex activities related to server system administration. The incumbent performs a wide variety of tasks including, but not limited to: analysis, design, test, and implementation for all server and server compute infrastructure platforms, physical and virtualized server hardware, and administrative/clerical tasks. The incumbent will display knowledge of system administration practices and participate in a team environment responsible for successful operation of virtual infrastructure, which may consist of different virtualization platforms, virtualization hardware, storage, backup, and server operating systems. The incumbent is responsible and shall demonstrate working knowledge of administering enterprise hardware, software, networking, storage, and virtualization technologies. The incumbent will assist and perform maintenance and operation duties for infrastructure system and hardware. The incumbent will assist with providing solutions in solving issues related to server hardware and software. The incumbent also assists other section team members, including, but not limited to: researching, accessing issues, providing solutions, and assisting if permissible. The incumbent shall extend his knowledge by performing research on existing and emerging technologies that can be beneficial to Caltrans. The incumbent performs complex activities of the System Development Life‑Cycle which includes: systems analysis, design, build, test, maintenance and operations. The incumbent shall support all phases of end‑user device life‑cycle management including: procurement, deployment, installation, configuration, maintenance and operations, as well as surplus. The incumbent will assist staff and management with training and use of infrastructure technologies. The incumbent shall collaborate with peers and management to update and recommend standards, processes, procedures, and technology practices. This position is located at 1500 5th Street Sacramento, CA 95814. Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment. This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in‑person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining‑unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate. If not working remotely, the employee will work in a climate‑controlled office under artificial lighting using a personal computer. The employee may be required to work for extended periods of time in a computer room that maintains an approximate temperature of 70 degrees. The employee may be required to travel. When available, a State vehicle will be provided. Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State‑owned or leased vehicle. If the employee utilizes their own personal vehicle, they may be reimbursed for travel expenses. The employee may be required to occasionally work overtime outside of normal work hours to resolve problems. Applicable compensation will follow the current and appropriate bargaining‑unit contract. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATE Desirable Qualifications

Experience managing and securing server operating systems (Windows, Unix, Linux) Understanding and experience with Microsoft Active Directory, networking technologies and concepts Experience in enterprise server hardware/software and VMware virtualization technologies Knowledge and experience in application, storage, database, and cloud technologies Critical thinking to tackle and troubleshoot complex technical problems Effective communication and writing skills Detail oriented Ambitious, collaborative, and willing to learn Desirable Certifications: CompTIA Server+, Any Microsoft or Linux Certification Benefits
