OVERVIEW
The Assistant Stylist is a temporary role focused on engaging with guests, consulting on hair care needs, and recommending products and services. The role is designed to prepare talent for a stylist position, with mentorship by an Elite or Master Stylist for the first 3 months, emphasizing performance, guest service, and compliance. In months 4–6, the Assistant Stylist will continue to assist while beginning to service guests of their own. A passion for the beauty industry and a willingness to learn additional skills are required.
GENERAL SUMMARY & SCOPE
The Assistant Stylist engages with guests to consult on hair care needs and recommend products and services. This temporary position prepares talent for a stylist role, with the first 3 months mentored by an Elite or Master Stylist and a focus on performance, people, and process. During months 4–6, the Assistant Stylist will continue assisting and begin servicing guests independently. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (Essential Functions)
The Assistant Stylist champions Ulta Beauty’s mission, vision, and values and performs duties and responsibilities accordingly, plus any other duties as assigned. Performance
Deliver exceptional guest service and contribute to store goals related to retail and service sales, guest loyalty, and retail shrink as set by Ulta Beauty. Support mentor Stylist in meeting or exceeding sales and productivity goals for hair services and haircare products by: Add-on recommendations Shampoo and treatment processes Blowouts and styling Color applications (global and retouch) Foil assistance (folding/handing foils) Cleaning, sanitation, and organizing duties Pre-booking Retail recommendations After month three, perform hair services including design, cuts, color, texture, treatments, styling, updos, perms, blowouts, keratin treatments, extensions, makeup applications, and ear piercing where applicable. Demonstrate products with guests to drive sales and enhance the guest service experience. Support in-store events, promotions, and marketing for an unrivaled guest experience. Stay informed on industry trends, products, and services during work time and be knowledgeable about ingredients and benefits to better serve guests. Maintain prompt, regular attendance. People
Develop guest relationships through consultations and appropriate recommendations. Serve all guests, including walk-ins, in a timely and efficient manner under mentorship. Collaborate with skin therapists and the retail team to provide a total-store guest experience. Establish professional peer and brand partner relationships to collaboratively deliver exceptional service. Promote the guest loyalty program and Ulta Beauty app with guests in-salon and on the sales floor. Process
Be knowledgeable of and compliant with Ulta Beauty policies, procedures, and standards. Follow safety, sanitation, and infection control procedures and state board guidelines. Follow established service protocols for a consistent and exceptional guest experience. Use booking and clientele systems to schedule return services and events. Communicate supply needs to the Experience Manager to ensure guest-readiness. Maintain store operational standards, including salon, sales floor, restrooms, backroom, and break areas. Attend mandatory trainings and meetings for ongoing professional development. Adhere to the Ulta Beauty dress code and protect company assets using loss prevention best practices. Execute other operational tasks as directed. JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education Cosmetology license Skills Basic understanding of the latest salon techniques for haircutting, hair color, lightening, styling, texture, treatments, extensions, makeup, and ear piercing (where applicable) or aptitude to develop skills in all service categories. Basic understanding of equipment and chemicals used in technical work Basic understanding to demonstrate, recommend, and sell professional hair care and makeup products Developed communication skills Ability to work independently and as part of a team Ability to build and maintain strong customer relationships and clientele SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS Flexible schedule including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays WORKING CONDITIONS Frequent mobility during shift Frequent bending, reaching, and twisting Continuous lifting and/or moving up to 10 lbs during shift Ability to stand for long periods Continuous coordination and manipulation of objects during shift Frequent use of computer and telephonic devices We will engage in the interactive process with an associate who has a disability to determine reasonable accommodations to perform essential functions.
