Overview of the role and expectations for growth and development within Ulta Beauty. The Assistant Stylist is a temporary position designed to prepare talent for a stylist role, with mentorship from Elite or Master Stylists for the first 3 months and potential to service guests in months 4–6. A passion for the beauty industry, exceptional guest service, and willingness to learn technical skills and product knowledge are essential. General Summary & Scope: The Assistant Stylist engages with guests, consults on hair care needs, and recommends products and services. This role emphasizes guest service, performance, and adherence to operating procedures and compliance standards. During months 1–3: mentored by a senior stylist and focused on performance (earning power and productivity), people (guest service), and process (procedures and compliance). During months 4–6: may begin servicing guests of their own while continuing support duties. Principal Duties & Responsibilities
Performance
Deliver exceptional guest service and help meet or exceed store goals related to retail and service sales, guest loyalty, and retail shrink as set by Ulta Beauty. Support mentor stylist in achieving sales and productivity goals for hair services and haircare products, including: Add-on recommendations Shampoo and treatment process Blowouts and styling Global and retouch color applications Foil assistance (folding/handing foils) Cleaning/sanitation and organizing duties Pre-booking Retail recommendations After month three, perform hair services including design, cuts, color, texture, treatments, styling, updos, perms, blowouts, keratin treatments, extensions, makeup applications, and ear piercing where applicable. Demonstrate products with guests to drive sales and enhance the guest service experience. Support execution of in-store events, promotions, and marketing initiatives to deliver an exceptional guest experience. Stay informed about new and existing industry trends, products, and services; be knowledgeable about ingredients and benefits to better serve guests. Maintain prompt, regular attendance. People
Develop guest relationships through consultations and appropriate retail/service recommendations. Serve all guests (including walk-ins) in a timely and efficient manner under the mentorship of another stylist. Collaborate with skin therapists and the retail team to provide a total-store guest experience. Establish professional peer and brand partner relationships to deliver exceptional guest service. Promote the guest loyalty program, including credit and the Ulta Beauty app, with guests in the salon and on the sales floor. Process
Be knowledgeable of and comply with Ulta Beauty policies, procedures, and standards. Follow safety, sanitation, and infection control procedures; ensure compliance with state board guidelines. Follow service protocols to ensure a consistent and excellent guest experience. Use appropriate booking and clientele systems to book guests for return services and events. Communicate supply needs to the Experience Manager to ensure guest-readiness at all times. Maintain store operational standards, including salon, sales floor, restrooms, backroom, break area, and other assigned areas. Attend mandatory trainings and meetings for professional development. Adhere to the Ulta Beauty dress code. Protect company assets by following loss prevention practices and providing exceptional guest service. Perform other operational tasks as directed. Education
Cosmetology license Skills
Basic understanding of salon techniques for haircuts, haircolor, lightening, styling, texture, treatments, extensions, makeup, and ear piercing (where applicable); ability to develop skills across service categories. Basic understanding of equipment and chemicals used in technical work Basic ability to demonstrate, recommend, and sell professional hair care and makeup products Developed communication skills Ability to work independently and as part of a team Ability to build and maintain strong customer relationships and clientele Special Position Requirements
