Overview
Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Facilities, the District’s Architect manages the general architectural and engineering work, including project design and management of new construction, remodeling, maintenance and repair of all Madison Metropolitan School District facilities. Salary range: 104,832.00 - 129,251.00. Work Schedule: Mon - Fri 8-4:30PM. This position works with District leadership and is the lead in building improvements, including but not limited to: student safety, energy efficiency, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction, and non-fossil energy projects. This position leads projects in referendum work to ensure district standards are met, kept and aligned with MMSD’s core values and strategic vision. Responsibilities
Architectural Documentation (50%)
Develop construction documents, including contracts, specifications, construction drawings and prepare them for internal or external review and approval. Submit to City and or County officials for official review and approval.
Identify and implement relevant building codes and ensure adherence to compliance requirements in all applicable work.
Coordinate construction, maintenance and repair activities involving consultants, suppliers, contractors, skilled trades and building administrators.
Create spaces that are relevant to K-12 Learning and align with the Strategic Plan of MMSD
Design & Construction Oversight (40%)
Lead all phases of the architectural project lifecycle, from conceptual design through construction administration
Review, approve and issue design modifications as the licensed architect responsible for project integrity
Identify, assess, and mitigate potential risks to intended outcomes of projects.
Organizational Responsiveness & Compliance (5%)
Serve on committees and workgroups as assigned.
Maintain knowledge of rules, regulations, codes, and protocols and adhere to them for daily business purposes.
Review and stay abreast of changes in knowledge and practices of position-related activities and job responsibilities.
Participate actively in position-related meetings and training as assigned by the supervisor.
Review and process open records requests regarding sustainability efforts or other requests in accordance with the statute and policies.
Forecast and manage fiscal responsibilities such as preparing forms, invoices, and reports as necessary for budget and accounting purposes in a timely manner.
Other duties as assigned (5%)
Perform other duties as assigned by executive leadership or designees.
Attend district and school functions that support MMSD’s strategic framework, initiatives and core values.
Complete any and all district-required training.
Build collaborative relationships with business partners.

Knowledge and experience in construction observation and construction management procedures.
Knowledge of and ability to use computer-aided design (AutoCAD), Revit and blue beam system knowledge of building construction, maintenance procedures, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems, and building materials.
Knowledge and ability in the preparation of estimates for construction of buildings, and remodeling projects including detailed estimates and budgetary estimates.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Architecture or closely related field
Experience that includes building planning and design, reviewing construction documents (i.e. working drawings and specifications) and construction observations.
Valid driver’s license and means of transportation.
License Requirements
Licensed Architect in the State of Wisconsin or eligibility for licensure within six months of hire
A Well-qualified Candidate Will Also Have
Certifications in any of the following:
American Institute of Architects membership (AIA)
Registered Architect (RA)
Professional Engineer (PE)
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)(AP)
National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB)
Experience with K-12 educational building projects
Physical Requirements Ability to work under generally safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors is minimal and poses little to no risk of injury. This position requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally and may involve walking, sitting, stooping or reaching. Manual dexterity is necessary for completing general tasks while operating office equipment. This position may require being stationary for extended periods of time.
Ability to perform work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments throughout the year, including in inclement weather, spaces without air conditioning, and areas where temperatures may be uncomfortable or fluctuate rapidly.
Working Conditions
Work requires travel to different locations within the district and to off-site meetings.
The position requires working evenings, nights, and some weekends.
