Who will you be working with? The Communication Engineering team for the Signaling & Systems business is committed to delivering industry leading Railway communication systems.
How will you make a difference? As a member of the Signaling & Systems Communication Engineering team, you will be responsible for engineering all aspects of Communication networks for Railway systems.
You will support network engineering, interfaces, fiber networks, rack designs, RF networks, platform designs and network configurations.
What do we want to know about you?
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science or relevant technical degree
Minimum of 4 years of Network experience.
Working technical knowledge of network and PC operating systems.
Working technical knowledge of current network hardware, protocols, and standards.
Capable of designing Ethernet, TCP/IP, SONET, MPLS based large area network in a rail environment.
Experience architecting, specifying, designing, testing, commissioning network systems.
Capable of not only designing but also configuring various switches, routers etc.
Must be able to troubleshoot lab based networks and also networks in the field.
Develop, implement and maintain policies, procedures and associated training plans for network resource administration, appropriate use, and disaster recovery.
Monitor and test network performance and provide network performance statistics and reports.
Must be able to rack and test equipment in a lab.
Recommend, schedule, and perform network improvements, upgrades, and repairs.
Manage and/or provide guidance to junior members of the team.
Fluency in English.
Excellent communication, technical, and presentation skills.
Must be a self‑starter; make things happen type of person.
Must be a hands‑on individual; must be able to do the work themselves and not just direct others.
Desired Experience
Experience with rail network systems for train control.
Strong preference for field experience + office design experience.
Strong interpersonal skills, creativity and curiosity with ability to effectively communicate.
Ability to deal with ambiguity, strategic agility, manage diversity and drive for results.
CCNA or other network certifications.
Typical Day
Develop detailed communication network architectures for rail signaling, control systems, and passenger information systems.
Select appropriate technologies to meet performance, reliability, and safety requirements.
Collaborate with Engineering teams internally and externally for adjacent subsystems.
Draft technical specifications, design drawings, and interface control documents.
Review contract, proposals and design documents to ensure compliance with industry standards.
Maintain up-to-date documentation for all network components and configurations.
Coordinate lab and field testing of communication systems including radios, interlockings, and centralized traffic control.
Perform performance, integration and interoperability testing between subsystems.
Troubleshoot issues during installation, testing, integration and commissioning phases.
Attend daily/weekly/monthly coordination meetings with project managers, contractors, and transit agencies.
Design network monitoring strategies using SNMP, NMS platforms and diagnostic tools.
Analyze performance metrics and plan preventive maintenance schedules.
Support lifecycle planning for hardware and software upgrades.
Develop installation guides for Communication system devices and/or cabinets.
Develop training documentation for Communication system devices and/or cabinets.
Develop technical design documents for Communication subsystems (SCADA, CCTV, PA, VMS, Radio, etc.).
Conduct risk assessments and contribute to safety certification processes.
Physical Demands Constantly: Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods; Communicating with others; Assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned; Personal responsibility of safety of self and others.
Occasionally: Performing field work in Railway environments; Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles; Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces; Adjusting or moving objects up to 20 pounds; Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers; Operating machinery and/or power tools; Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
Salary Range Salary range for this role is between $67,400.00 and $96,000.00.
