We are seeking a highly experienced and technically competent
Project Accountant
to join our team and support heavy civil and infrastructure projects. This role is critical to ensuring accurate job cost tracking, billing, and forecasting—providing visibility into project financial performance and enabling successful project delivery. Candidates must have a construction accounting background, preferably in heavy civil, highway, or underground utility work, and be comfortable interacting directly with the field team. CORE AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY. JOB COST MANAGEMENT Enter and review job budgets received from project managers (PM). Evaluate budget for cost codes and cost types. Maintain contracts, purchase orders, and change orders in the accounting system. Conduct monthly job cost reviews for WIP and profitability. BILLING & REVENUE Generate billing packages that adhere to owner or contract specifications. Update and maintain monthly billings in accounting software. Collaborate with project engineers and PMs to finalize billing. Submit all required documentation in coordination with field teams and project support. FORECASTING & REPORTING Collaborate monthly with Superintendents and PMs on cost-to-complete forecasts. Update accounting system for forecasts based on committed costs and actuals. Reconcile actual vs. committed expenditures and flag variances. COMPLIANCE & CONTROLS Confirm subcontractor compliance for COIs, lien waivers, and safety, etc. to facilitate payment. Validate data for accuracy prior to system entry to ensure error free processing. CROSS-FUNCTIONAL COORDINATION Serve as the liaison between finance and operations: PMs, Superintendents, Project Admins. Attend job site visits (as needed) to build working knowledge of field conditions. Assist project personnel in improving their awareness and understanding of job cost data and reporting. SKILLS YOU POSSESS. 5+ years of experience in project/job cost accounting within construction (preferably heavy civil, highway, or underground utility). Experience with Viewpoint (preferred), Sage, Acumatica, or Premier; QuickBooks not acceptable. Strong understanding of:
