Job Summary The Site Safety & Health Officer (SSHO) is responsible for the development and/or review of the Accident Prevention Plan (APP), activity hazard analyses, amendments to the APP, on-site safety education, toolbox safety meetings, overall safety compliance of the project, and proactive, innovative problem-solving for site-specific safety issues. The SSHO will ensure projects comply with local, state, and federal health and safety guidelines and procedures, oversee the safety of all employees, ensure projects are up to code, and provide recommendations for safety improvements. The position reports to a project site five days a week, and the ideal candidate lives near the project location or surrounding areas. The company supports opportunities to work on other project locations in the United States after the initial assignment.
Responsibilities
Create and implement site-specific Accident Prevention Plan for construction per EM 385 1-1
Create and review Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA) and Work Plans based on project schedule and definable features of work
Ensure all safety submittals are created, submitted, and approved in advance of scheduled meetings
Be on site whenever work is performed; conduct site inspections and observations throughout the shift
Provide project safety orientations and briefs
Document Weekly Safety Meetings, Weekly Inspections, deficiencies and corrective actions, man-hours worked, and any incidents
Lead and document near-miss and incident investigations with root cause analysis
Develop and implement OHS training programs
Oversee disposal of substances according to environmental guidelines
Ensure statutes, regulations, and codes are understood and met
Enforce safety and environmental policies and procedures
Minimum Qualifications
10+ years of construction industry safety experience with federal government construction projects
30-hour OSHA construction safety class
EM 385 certification or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire
Experience managing safety on projects $20MM+
Average of at least 24 hours of formal safety training each year for the past 4 years, with training for competent person status in at least four areas: Excavation; Scaffolding; Fall protection; Hazardous energy; Confined space; Health hazard recognition, evaluation and control; First aid/CPR
Personal protective equipment and clothing selection, use, and maintenance
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience
Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) certification
Healthcare or hospital experience
HAZWOPR 40, lead awareness, blood-borne pathogens, trenching and shoring competent person, forklift, man-lift, and fire watch training certified
