Overview
The John L. Nau III Center for Civil War History at the University of Virginia invites applications for a one-year postdoctoral research associate in the history of the Civil War era, starting in August 2026. This is a 12-month salaried position with full-time benefits. The research associate is expected to be in residence in Charlottesville, Virginia, and to attend the Nau Center’s public lectures, manuscript workshops, and other relevant events. They will have no teaching or administrative responsibilities in this role. Responsibilities
During the year, they will produce a book proposal and workshop at least one chapter. Minimum Qualifications
Education: Doctoral degree Preferred Qualifications
Education: Doctoral degree in History or American Studies within the past three years. Expertise in the Civil War and Reconstruction Eras Demonstrated publication record and strong writing skills. Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs. Salary
The anticipated salary is $59,000 per year plus UVA benefits Exemption Status

This is a restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability. This position has a term limit of 1 year after which continued employment will depend on department need and funding. Work Arrangement
