Overview
Parks, Heritage, and Tourism Interpreter II Location: Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources (Smackover, AR). Salary: $47,397. Closing date: Until Filled. The Park Interpreter is responsible for planning, coordinating, directing, and presenting interpretive and outdoor recreation-focused programs and special events for park visitors, civic groups, schools, and other organizations. Programming aims to facilitate engaging experiences and guide park guests toward a personal sense of place regarding the cultural, historical, and natural resources within the collections and mission of Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources and south Arkansas. Position supports research and data recording for park resources and programs, writes detailed program plans, coordinates publicity with the Communications section (media releases, news articles, flyers, and brochures), may appear on local radio or television, assists with care of museum artifacts and records, and occasionally delivers presentations using audio-visual equipment. Other duties include assisting with strategic planning, site maintenance, and performing office, front desk, and hospitality-related duties as necessary. Applicant may serve as park manager on duty in the absence of other personnel and assist in park operations, including emergency response situations such as medical and weather incidents. Applicant must have technical and communication skills sufficient to plan and coordinate safe, organized, engaging programs and special events; duties include logistical coordination and budgetary requirements. Must align interpretive programming for schools with Arkansas state curriculum standards. Must possesses a valid driver’s license and be able to work a varied shift, including weekends and holidays, and in varied weather conditions outdoors. A criminal background check and a driver’s record check are required. Design and present educational programs, guided tours, and interactive exhibits focused on Arkansas’s natural and cultural heritage. Engage visitors of all ages through storytelling, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. Conduct special events, living history programs, and nature walks to enhance visitor experiences. Provide exceptional customer service by answering visitor inquiries and offering recommendations. Collaborate with educators and community organizations to promote heritage tourism and outdoor education. Assist in historical and environmental research to ensure program accuracy and authenticity. Work with conservation staff to promote and protect natural and cultural resources. Participate in historical reenactments, artifact preservation, and environmental stewardship projects. Maintain interpretive tools, props, and presentation materials. Keep records of program attendance, visitor feedback, and outreach efforts. Qualifications
At least two years of experience in interpretive programming, museums, education, or a related field. Other job-related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic requirements. Preferred qualifications: artifact care, museum records, archival research, public speaking, Microsoft Office, photographic equipment, and writing of publications. Knowledge of interpretive methods, heritage tourism, and environmental education principles; ability to develop and deliver age-appropriate educational programs. Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to translate complex topics into accessible content. Strong problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills; experience working with diverse audiences. Two years of experience in interpretive programming, environmental education, museums, education, or a related field. Licensure/Certifications:
