Student Employment Program The OCC Student Employment Program provides opportunities to earn money while pursuing education, offering temporary employment within the Coast Community College District. Employment can range from summer positions to roles lasting while you are a student. Opportunities may align with your academic field or be in other areas. The program includes roles in the following categories:
General-Student Assistant
Federal Work-Study Student Assistant
CalWORKs Work-Study Student Assistant
Non-academic, non-classified Student Assistants are at-will employees and are not benefits eligible. They are not part of the classified service, and the Education Code prohibits displacement of classified personnel by employing students in college work-study programs.
Student Assistants may not exceed 19.5 working hours per week during fall and spring semesters. They may work a maximum of 28 hours per week outside of those semesters.
Student Assistants are prohibited from being employed by the District in any other capacity during the same Fiscal Year (July 1 - June 30).
Student Assistants work in a department with responsibilities designed for non-classified student staff. Duties range from unskilled to skilled and may involve manual, clerical, and public-contact tasks. Assignments consider class timings and exams and are more flexible than off-campus jobs. Duties will vary by assignment and are determined by departmental needs. On-the-job training is often provided. Representative Duties and Levels Representative duties are defined by the appropriate Division/Department, with training often provided on the job. Levels include:
Student Assistant I - Entry level/Semi-skilled : Work under immediate supervision with standardized, routine duties.
Student Assistant II - Intermediate/Advanced : Work under general supervision; duties are varied with moderate responsibility; may involve access to data systems and confidential information; minimum one year of experience in the same student assistant assignment.
Student Assistant III - Specialist/Lead : Wide range of skills; independent judgment; may direct lower-level staff; minimum of two years of experience in the same assignment.
Qualifications and Physical Demands Education and Experience:

: Little or no prior experience or education required
Student Assistant II
: Some previous knowledge, experience, or education required
Student Assistant III
: Prior experience, education, or specialized skills required
Skills and Competencies
Skills required to perform job assignments.
Depending on the level and assignment, jobs may require limited independent judgment and decision-making.
Ability to balance work and studies.
Qualifications:
Students must be enrolled in classes for the current semester and have been awarded federal work-study through the financial aid office to be eligible for a student assistant position under the federal work-study funding.
