Overview

Coastline College, a community college located just outside of Los Angeles in Orange County, California, invites applications for Student Assistants. Student Assistants are non-academic, non-classified positions and are not part of the classified service. Hours and duties vary by department and assignment. Representative Duties

Specific job duties are defined by the appropriate Division and/or Department. Considerable on‑the‑job training may occur. The following levels describe typical responsibilities: Student Assistant I - Entry level/Semi-skilled:

Work under immediate supervision with established methods and routine tasks. May involve use of special equipment, software applications, or tools; supervisor assigns, coordinates, and instructs. Student Assistant II - Intermediate/Advanced:

Work under general supervision with some training on the job. Tasks are varied and may require handling more sophisticated data systems and confidential information. Some independent judgment, analysis, and decision‑making skills are required; at least one year in the same student assistant assignment recommended. Student Assistant III - Specialist/Lead:

Work under general supervision with a broad set of skills and substantial training. Requires considerable independent judgment and may involve directing lower‑level student employees; usually at least two years in the same assignment. Qualifications and Physical Demands

Prior experience, education, or specialized skills required Skills and Competencies: Skills required to perform job assignments. Depending on the level and assignment, jobs may require limited independent judgment and decision‑making. Ability to balance work and studies. Qualifications: Students must be enrolled in classes for the current semester and have been awarded federal work‑study through the financial aid office to be eligible for a student assistant position under the federal work‑study funding. Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of diversity within the community college student population, including factors related to equity‑minded practice. Non‑academic, non‑classified Student Assistants are not part of the classified service. The Education Code prohibits displacement of classified personnel and impairment of existing contracts by the employment of full‑time or part‑time students in work‑study programs. Student Assistants are at‑will employees and are not benefits eligible. Student Assistants may not exceed 19.5 working hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. They may work a maximum of 28 hours per week outside of those semesters. Student Assistants are prohibited from being employed by the District in any other capacity during the same fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). Employment is contingent upon verification of CalWORKs work‑study award, class schedule, employment history, background verification as governed by Education Code requirements, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees. Student Assistant assignments do not offer fringe benefits or pay for holidays or time not worked. Hours and start date will be arranged with the supervisor. Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; failure to meet attendance requirements may affect employment. The person in this position is a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with Coast Community College District policies, procedures, and Title IX.
