Student Assistant Levels & Representative Duties

Student Assistant I – Entry level/Semi‑skilled : Work is under immediate supervision. Assignments involve standardized duties that are routine and repetitive. The supervisor assigns work, oversees production level, and provides instructions.

Student Assistant II – Intermediate/Advanced : Work is under general supervision. Assignments vary and are less routine, requiring moderate independent judgment and decision‑making. A minimum of one year of experience in the same student assistant assignment is required.

Student Assistant III – Specialist/Lead : Work is under general supervision. Assignments involve a broad variety of skills and tasks, requiring considerable independent judgment and decision‑making. Students may direct the work of lower‑level student employees. A minimum of two years of experience in the same student assistant assignment is required.

Qualifications

Students must be full‑time students enrolled in a minimum of 12 units at one of the three colleges within the Coast Community College District (OCC, GWC, CCC) to be eligible for a student assistant position.

Prior experience or education required for Student Assistant III; some previous knowledge or experience required for Student Assistant II; little or no prior experience required for Student Assistant I.

Students must demonstrate responsiveness to and understanding of racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population (DEIA). Students who are part‑time may qualify for federal work‑study programs or other available grants; please complete the Financial Aid application at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa.

Conditions of Employment Student Assistants are at‑will employees, have no entitlement rights to any position in the district, and are not eligible for benefits. Student Assistants may not exceed 19.5 working hours per week during the fall and spring semesters and may work a maximum of 28 hours per week outside of the fall and spring semesters. Student Assistants are prohibited from being employed by the district in any other capacity during the same fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). Employment is contingent upon verification of class schedule, employment history, background verification as governed under Education Code requirements, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees. Hours of work and the effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. Candidates will also be responsible for all travel expenses if selected for an interview; the district does not reimburse candidate travel expenses.
