Customs Manager / Head of Brokerage Role Summary
The Customs Entry Writer is responsible for preparing, submitting, and auditing import entries to U.S. Customs on behalf of clients. This role ensures compliance with customs regulations and accurate documentation, working closely with operations, clients, and regulatory authorities. Key Responsibilities
Prepare and file U.S. Customs entries (formal and informal) using ACE/ABI or equivalent systems. Classify goods under the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) and determine duty, taxes, and fees. Review commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, and other supporting documents. Coordinate with origin agents, carriers, and clients to collect missing information or resolve discrepancies. Address customs holds, queries, AMS/ISF mismatches, inspections, and partner government agency (PGA) issues. Audit entries for accuracy and compliance before submission to customs. Maintain and update client profiles, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and tariff rulings. Provide status updates and communicate release information to internal teams and clients. Support billing and cost recovery / chargeback processes related to customs services. Keep abreast of changes in customs regulations, trade agreements, and compliance guidelines. Required Qualifications
2–5 years of experience in U.S. import customs entry writing or customs brokerage operations (air, ocean, or both). Solid understanding of customs rules, regulations, Incoterms, and trade compliance principles. Working knowledge of HTS classification and valuation methodology. Proficiency with customs entry systems (e.g., ACE/ABI, Descartes, CargoWise, or similar). Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple files simultaneously. Clear written and verbal communication skills—client-facing role. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet deadlines, and handle exception cases. Preferred / Differentiating Skills
Licensed Customs Broker or working toward the license. Experience with trade agreements, special tariff programs, drawback, or DAC. Exposure to regulatory agencies (FDA, USDA, EPA, CPSC, etc.). Experience with high-volume shipment processing. Work Conditions & Benefits
