Overview

Correctional Officer I - Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility (AVCF). This posting will be used to fill vacant positions at our Crowley location. AVCF opened in August 1987 and is a Level III facility that manages a diverse inmate population. The facility has specialized housing units and operates 24/7. Responsibilities

Work directly with inmates in a locked facility. Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas. Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required). Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles. Operate mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms. Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule. Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles. Monitor visiting areas and conduct counts (formal, informal and emergency). Maintain logs and conduct searches for contraband (canine, metal detector, pat-down, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches). Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards; inspect inmate mail and property. Respond to emergencies (fights, medical emergencies, fires, escapes) using established protocols. Follow tool and key control procedures; attend roll call and document incidents using established reporting practices. Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors. Positions may require working additional hours/shifts to maintain safety and security of facilities open 24/7. Minimum Qualifications & Conditions

High School Diploma or GED. Applicants must acknowledge and agree to Conditions of Employment and be legally eligible to work in the United States (CDOC uses E-Verify; CDOC does not sponsor non-residents). Must be at least 18 years of age; possess a valid, unrestricted driver’s license. Have no felony convictions and meet related statutory requirements; successful completion of a background investigation. All offers contingent upon a health screening and ability to perform essential functions; completion of Colorado DOC Basic Training modules. Physically able to perform Defensive Tactics; the role may involve lifting, restraining, and using firearms and chemical agents as trained. Willingness to work all shifts, weekends, holidays, and travel as needed; tuberculin screening is required for new employees. Willingness to use physical force as trained and to work in a locked facility under varying conditions. Required Competencies

Strong work ethic, accountability, integrity and dependability. Sound judgment, decision-making, and teamwork. Excellent customer service and attention to detail; effective English communication (verbal and written). Ability to monitor, observe, and respond to security-related changes; knowledge of criminal justice systems and applicable regulations. Basic computer skills and ability to document information clearly; ability to learn and operate firearms, restraints and security devices. Ability to perform searches (canine, general area, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip or vehicle) and to operate security equipment. Ability to quickly respond to emergencies and maintain composure under pressure; willingness to work outside in inclement weather; adherence to CDOC Drug Deterrence Program. Self-control and resilience in potentially violent situations; ability to work with diverse populations and communicate with inmate families and the public. Preferred Qualification

Bilingual; mentoring or volunteer experience. Important Information
