Overview

The Correctional Officer I (Temporary Aide) at Buena Vista Correctional Facility supports the CDOC mission by maintaining safety and security in the facility, preparing inmates for community reentry, and working as part of a professional, dependable team. The posting will fill vacant positions at the Buena Vista location. Responsibilities

Work directly with inmates in a locked facility Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required) Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles Operate a variety of mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles Monitor visiting areas Conduct formal, informal and emergency counts Cross check and maintain movement logs Conduct searches for contraband (canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches) Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards Inspect inmate mail and property Respond to emergencies, such as fights, medical emergencies, fires and escapes Follow tool and key control procedures and ensure proper storage and documentation Attend roll call and document incidents using established reporting practices Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or a GED certificate Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States Must be at least 18 years of age; valid unrestricted Colorado driver’s license No felony convictions; suitability for working with offenders; ability to pass background investigation Successful completion of a background investigation and health screening Successfully pass all modules of the CDOC Basic Training, including Defensive Tactics Ability to use physical force as trained; willingness to work in a locked correctional facility; ability to travel and transport inmates as needed TB screening required Required Competencies

Strong work ethic, accountability, integrity and dependability Sound judgment and decision-making Interpersonal skills and teamwork Excellent customer service and attention to detail English reading, writing and verbal communication proficiency Ability to monitor inmate movements and security devices Knowledge of criminal justice systems, CDOC policies, and safety protocols Computer proficiency and ability to document information Ability to perform searches and use security equipment Ability to respond quickly to emergencies and maintain composure under pressure Willingness to work various shifts, weekends and holidays; ability to work outdoors in inclement weather Adherence to the CDOC Drug Deterrence Program Self-control and emotional resilience Ability to discontinue use of tobacco on facility property; tobacco-free facilities policy Preferred Qualifications
