CORRECTIONAL OFFICER I - Buena Vista Correctional Complex

Overview
The Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of Colorado Department of Corrections' (CDOC) prison facilities. Officers support the CDOC mission, vision and values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry. Positions must cooperate with other staff members and work as a cohesive team, while managing a diverse inmate population. This posting will be used to fill vacant positions at the Buena Vista Correctional Complex (BVCC), which comprises Buena Vista Correctional Facility (BVCF) and Buena Vista Minimum Center (BVMC). BVCF capacity: 934 inmates (medium custody) BVMC capacity: 300 inmates (minimum custody) Responsibilities
Positions maintain the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates. Duties include, but are not limited to: Work directly with inmates in a locked facility Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required) Monitor facility perimeter and detain unidentified pedestrians/vehicles Operate mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms Control movement of inmates during daily schedules Escort and transport inmates in state vehicles Monitor visiting areas Conduct formal, informal and emergency counts Cross check and maintain movement logs Conduct searches for contraband (can include canine, metal detector, pat-downs, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches) Inspect facility and cells for health, safety and sanitation Inspect inmate mail and property Respond to emergencies (fights, medical, fires, escapes) following established protocols Ensure proper tool and key control, documentation Attend roll call and document incidents using established reporting methods Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors Positions may require working additional hours and/or shifts to maintain 24/7 facility safety and security. Minimum Qualification:
High School Diploma or GED Conditions of Employment: Applicants must acknowledge and agree to Conditions of Employment during the application process Legally eligible to work in the United States; CDOC uses e-Verify; CDOC does not sponsor non-residents At least 18 years old Valid unrestricted Colorado driver’s license with safe driving record; ability to operate state-owned vehicles Former state employees with disciplinary terminations or resignations in lieu of termination may face disqualification Successful completion of a background investigation; provide disposition of charges if applicable All offers contingent on successful health screening Complete Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training modules, including defensive tactics assessments Must be willing and able to work all shifts, weekends and holidays; new officers receive shift schedules after Basic Training Willing to use physical force and firearms if trained; may be exposed to oleoresin capsicum during training and assignment Willing to work in a locked facility with variable noise/temperature; may work outdoors in inclement weather Willing to travel and/or transport inmates in state vehicles Tuberculosis screening required for all new employees Other Requirements:

Strong work ethic, accountability, integrity and dependability Sound judgment and decision-making Interpersonal skills and teamwork Customer service, attention to detail English reading/writing proficiency and effective communication skills Observational skills to detect security issues and hazards Ability to monitor inmate movements and maintain accurate counts Clear, respectful communication with inmates, families and public Knowledge of criminal justice systems, rules, and departmental regulations Basic computer skills and ability to document information Ability to learn and apply correctional methods for inmate reentry Respectful interaction with a diverse population Search procedures (canine, metal detector, pat-down, perimeter, strip, vehicle) Operate and secure mechanical doors and security devices Handling firearms, restraints, and security equipment as trained Use of chemical agents (pepper spray) as trained Effective use of communications equipment (radio, phone, PA) Ability to respond quickly to emergencies and follow safety protocols Physical fitness to perform duties, including climbing stairs and standing for shifts Willingness to work outdoors in inclement weather and adhere to drug deterrence policies Emotional resilience and ability to stay alert under pressure Preferred Qualifications
Bi-lingual abilities Experience mentoring others and/or volunteer work Important Information
The assessment process may include suitability screening, eSkills assessment, oral/written performance assessments, or other methods to establish eligibility. Candidates should fully complete the Work Experience section and provide detailed qualifications, experiences and accomplishments related to the job description. Background investigations require at least ten years of relevant work history unless more recent experience applies.
