Correctional Officer I - TEMPORARY AIDE – Buena Vista Correctional Facility (CDOC). This temporary position is used to fill vacancies at the Buena Vista location and is governed by terms of employment for Temporary Aides (limited to a nine-month maximum within a 12-month rolling period). Description Of Job

The Correctional Officer I (CO I) temporary position maintains the safety and security of CDOC prison facilities. Officers support the department’s mission, vision and values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry. Officers communicate professionally with inmates, families, coworkers, supervisors, managers and the public and work as part of a team to manage a diverse inmate population. Responsibilities

Work directly with inmates in a locked facility Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required) Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles Operate mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule Escort and transport inmates in state vehicles Monitor visiting areas; conduct counts (formal, informal, and emergency) Cross-check and maintain movement logs Conduct searches for contraband (canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches) Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards Inspect inmate mail and property Respond to emergencies (fights, medical, fires, escapes) using established protocols Follow tool and key control procedures, ensure proper storage and documentation Attend roll call and document incidents using established reporting practices Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED. Conditions of Employment

Applicants must acknowledge and agree to Conditions of Employment within the application process Must be legally eligible to work in the United States (CDOC uses e-Verify; CDOC does not sponsor non-residents) Must be at least 18 years of age Possess a valid, unrestricted driver’s license Disclosures required for prior state employment; extensive background checks required Successful completion of a background investigation All offers contingent on a health screening to certify ability to perform essential functions Successfully pass all modules of the CDOC Basic Training (including defensive tactics and related assessments) Willingness to work all shifts, doubles, weekends and holidays; shift schedules released after Basic Training Willingness and ability to use physical force and firearms as trained Willingness to work in a locked facility with variable conditions and outdoors as needed Willingness to travel and/or transport inmates in state vehicles TB screening required for all new employees Required Competencies

Strong work ethic, accountability, integrity and dependability Sound judgment and decision-making skills Interpersonal skills and teamwork; customer service orientation Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English Ability to observe, observe inmate locations, and maintain accurate counts Effective communication with inmates, families, and staff Knowledge of criminal justice systems, ADA, PREA, and departmental regulations Proficiency with basic computer tasks and email Ability to recount events in a clear, written form Ability to apply the CDOC mission and correctional practices to prepare inmates for reentry Ability to monitor and interact with inmates respectfully; work with diverse populations Ability to conduct searches and use security equipment Ability to learn firearms, restraints and security devices; willingness to use chemical agents if trained Ability to communicate via two-way radio and other communications tools Ability to respond quickly to emergencies and adhere to safety protocols Physical ability to climb stairs, walk on hard surfaces, and work outdoors in inclement weather Adherence to the CDOC Drug Deterrence Program Self-control and resilience under stress Preferred Qualifications
