Controller

to join our leadership team. This vital role ensures the financial health, transparency, and accountability of the Conference, serving both as a financial steward and as a partner in ministry with clergy, laity, and churches. As Controller, you will play a key role in guiding the Conference’s financial operations, implementing best practices, and providing critical insights that support strategic decision-making. You will oversee accounting, budgeting, audits, reporting, internal controls, and compliance, all while ensuring alignment with GAAP standards and United Methodist practices. This is more than a financial leadership position—it’s an opportunity to make a meaningful impact by supporting ministries across Tennessee and Western Kentucky. Lead all aspects of financial reporting, analysis, and recordkeeping. Manage budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow to ensure fiscal responsibility. Oversee annual audits and maintain strong internal controls. Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit regulations, and United Methodist standards. Supervise accounts payable/receivable, reconciliations, payroll tax reporting, and fixed asset management. Collaborate with committees, clergy, and staff to provide financial guidance and support. Serve as a trusted partner to the Conference Treasurer and administrative team. Education : Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA preferred. Experience : Minimum 8 years of finance/accounting experience (nonprofit experience strongly preferred); audit experience required. Skills : Deep knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting practices. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and reporting skills. High level of integrity and ability to handle confidential information. Proficiency with accounting software (Shelby Systems experience a plus), Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to support both professional and ministry contexts. Familiarity with United Methodist structure is preferred. This is a hybrid position based out of our Nashville, TN office, requiring in-office attendance on specified days. Candidates must live within a commutable distance of Nashville, TN, to fulfill the hybrid work schedule. Some overnight travel is required. Collaborative, mission-driven team environment. Salary Range: $100,000 to $120,000 Eligible for medical/dental/vision benefits, a 403(b) retirement savings plan, and paid time off.
