Position Summary The Accountant plays a critical role in supporting the financial health and accountability of the organization. This position is responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting functions, maintaining accurate financial records, supporting grant and fund reporting, and ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and donor requirements. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, experienced in nonprofit financial operations and well-versed in generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
Focus of the Role The Accountant reports to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and is responsible for ensuring accurate finance, accounting and reporting activities of the organization. The Accountant will lead all day-today finance operations of a budget of nearly $10 million and collaborate with a team of 3-5 finance team members including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and fundraising. In addition, she or he will partner with the CFO, senior leadership, and human resources (HR) staff to enhance and better integrate finance, HR, and IT functions.
Responsibilities
Maintain the general ledger and ensure the accuracy of all accounting records in accordance with nonprofit GAAP
Ensure accuracy of accounts payable and accounts receivable, donor contributions, grant reimbursements, and program revenue
Perform monthly and quarterly reconciliations of bank accounts, credit card activity, and balance sheet accounts
Prepare accurate and timely financial statements and internal reports for management and the Board
Track and report on restricted and unrestricted funds, ensuring compliance with donor and grantor requirements
Assist in the preparation of grant budgets, financial reports, and audits
Work closely with program and development staff to provide financial insight and support for grant proposals and program planning
Support the annual budget development process and monitor spending against budget
Assist with the preparation and coordination of the annual audit and IRS Form 990
Maintain organized financial documentation in compliance with internal policies and funder regulations
Participate in the ongoing improvement of financial systems, controls, and processes
Qualifications Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
2+ years of nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred
Experience with fund accounting, grant reporting, and donor-related revenue a plus
Knowledge of IRS nonprofit compliance and financial reporting requirements
CPA or working toward certification a plus
Skills & Competencies
Proficient in nonprofit accounting software (e.g., MIP, Sage Intacct, or similar)
Strong understanding of nonprofit GAAP and fund accounting principles
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, formulas, etc.)
Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Other duties as assigned
