The Certified First Assistant is responsible for assisting the surgeon under direct and indirect supervision throughout pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative duties and procedures at all times.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
Places equipment and supplies in operating room and arranges instruments according to instructions.
Assists team members to place and position patient on table.
Scrubs arms and hands and dons gown and gloves, and aids team to don gowns and gloves.
Maintains supply of fluids, such as sterile saline, sterile water, etc.
Hands instruments and supplies to surgeon, holds retractors, cuts sutures, and performs other tasks as directed by surgeon during operation.
Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body planes.
Utilizing running or interrupted sutures with absorbable or non-absorbable material of wound layers, including muscle and fascia.
Utilizing subcuticular closure technique with or without adhesive skin closure strips.
Closing skin with method per surgeon’s directive (suture, staples, etc.).
Postoperative subcutaneous injection of local anesthetic per surgeon’s directive.
Selecting and applying appropriate wound dressings, including the following: liquid or spray occlusive materials; absorbent material affixed with tape or circumferential wrapping; immobilizing dressing (soft or rigid); providing assistance in securing drainage systems to tissue.
Inventories and orders medical supplies and materials.
Washes and sterilizes equipment and cleans operating room.

Will be required to lift objects that weigh more than 50 pounds.
Must be able to exert at least 25 pounds of force to assist with moving of medical records.
Be able to stand, bend, and stoop, and/or sit within a confined area for prolonged periods of time, up to 8 to 12 hours.
Be able to function without nourishment or medication for a period of time extending to 6 to 8 hours. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
Dexterity: Frequent repetitive motion of hands/wrist involved.
Will be working in a clean, well-lighted area.
May be required to deal with unpleasant environmental situations resulting from patient care or patient activity.
Hazards and Risks: Direct patient contact with possible exposure to communicable diseases, exposure to radiation, and CRT.
