The Certified Coder Complex Inpt analyzes relevant clinical and demographic information from the Health Information record, assigns appropriate DRGs and ICD-10 codes following appropriate guidelines and ascertains the above are compliant with CMS, state and other regulatory agencies. Responsibilities
Review and coding of complex inpatient acute records including Trauma, Cardiovascular, Cardiothoracic, Neurosurgical, and Orthopedic surgical service lines
Utilizes ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding guidelines and conventions for the establishment of diagnoses and procedures
Assigns hospital DRG's proficiently and analyzes documentation for appropriate severity of illness and risk of mortality reporting.
Completes analysis of documentation, abstracting and code assignment by body system, organ, etiology, and morphology according to the American Hospital Association Official ICD-10 Coding Guidelines (Coding Clinic), CPT4/HCPCS Coding Guidelines, ASC groups, UHDDS Guidelines, HCFA methodology guidelines for coding, state and federal guidelines and hospital abstracting guidelines
Performs queries and obtains documentation required for coding and reporting accurately
Coordinates documentation needs, query follow-up and final DRG assignment with the Clinical Documentation Specialist
Participates in the documentation improvement process in conjunction with leadership
Consistently meets or exceeds coding productivity standards as per department policies
Participates in continuing education and acquires CEUs required to maintain certification(s)
The Certified Coder Complex Inpt reports to the Manager.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree Health Information Management and one of the following AHIMA certifications: CCS: Certified Coding Specialist certification
RHIA: Registered Health Information Administrator Certification
At least one year coding experience in acute tertiary care hospital
ICD-10-PCS coding experience in transplant, trauma, orthopedic, and neurosurgery preferred
Proficiency in the use of coding and DRG grouping software
Must be able to communicate effectively in English (Oral/Written)
4 years coding experience in acute tertiary care hospital may substitute for bachelor’s requirement
