Overview

The Litigation Support Team at Leidos supporting the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) in Los Angeles, CA has an opening for a Senior Paralegal to work in a downtown Los Angeles, CA DOJ office performing litigation support duties. This is an opportunity to use your experience helping the U.S. Department of Justice achieve its mission. Overtime and travel may be required as needed with proper authorization. Individual may support any division/section within the office depending on the needs at time of hire. Responsibilities

Performs specialized legal research and writing in support of work in assigned area of criminal or civil prosecution, including analysis of statutes, legislative intent, judicial precedents, agency rules and regulations, and law review articles relevant to assigned cases.

Utilizes a variety of automated resources to research case or program-specific legal matters, and to participate in assigned areas of criminal or civil proceedings, e.g., electronic discovery.

Assists in the development of case referrals by ensuring referrals meet agency and USAO standards for litigation; reviews and evaluates referrals to determine the need for additional information and evidence; plans a comprehensive approach to obtain this information and evidence; assists the assigned attorneys regarding the merits and weaknesses of specific referrals based on applicable law, evidence of liability and damages, and potential defenses; helps the USAO develop new referrals by maintaining a good working relationship with client agencies and the public, and by assisting in training for federal, state, and local agencies in the assigned area.

Performs tasks associated with litigation in the assigned specialty area including: receiving and analyzing incoming pleadings and correspondence; determining appropriate action and noting time limitations for responses; drafting correspondence and legal documents for attorney signature; drafting proposed orders and decrees for signature of judges and magistrates.

Assists in pretrial preparation by preparing, scheduling, reviewing, and organizing discovery; notifying, interviewing, and managing witnesses; researching case law; supporting assigned attorneys in court proceedings by briefing on pertinent facts, issues, and case law, and by compiling, organizing, and indexing exhibits.

The above duties may be performed individually or in combination. Senior Paralegal duties are defined by the contract. Pay:

The pay for this position is $30.10/hr. Basic Qualifications

Requires paralegal certificate, Juris Doctorate, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school with at least one year of study completed.

2+ years of litigation paralegal or related project experience.

At least one year of experience in automated litigation support.

Sound working knowledge of federal and state court systems, legal research procedures, and legal research resources.

Thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw.

Hands-on familiarity with computer applications including word processing, databases (e.g., document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.

Familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.

Must be a US citizen and able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in a Government and/or Litigation Support environment in conjunction with basic qualifications is valued.

Trial experience is very helpful.

Experience with Relativity or similar applications is preferred.

Current or active clearance.

This position is covered under the Service Contract Act and is subject to minimum requirements. Leidos ensures that all provisions are satisfied.
