The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is seeking an Occupational Safety Specialist IV or V for the Occupational Safety Division in Austin, TX. The role focuses on promoting and maintaining a safe working environment in field operations, with a proactive approach to safety policies, best practices, and continuous improvement. The position offers two levels with different salary ranges and responsibilities. Occupational Safety Specialist IV
is a mid-level safety role with responsibilities that include advising, coordinating, and training on occupational safety and hazardous materials matters; planning and monitoring safety programs; developing specifications for safety items; analyzing incident data; and preparing safety information for publication. The IV position emphasizes field-oriented safety leadership and program support. Occupational Safety Specialist V
includes all duties of the IV and may serve as a lead, coordinate safety meetings, analyze policies for improvement, and facilitate collaboration across groups to resolve issues. Responsibilities
Occupational Safety Specialist IV: Advise, coordinate, and train Department personnel in occupational safety and hazardous materials matters; conduct safety needs surveys; report findings and follow up actions; focus on field operations. Assist in planning, scheduling, and monitoring programs or activities that promote employee safety and incident prevention. Assist in developing or reviewing specifications for purchasing employee safety and hazardous materials items. Determine and analyze reported incident frequency rates. Develop policies, procedures, guidelines, and rule interpretations to comply with federal, state, and local rules and regulations. Identify injury types and incident causes; inspect work areas/activities to identify hazards; recommend preventive actions and conduct follow-up investigations. Perform industrial hygiene testing to ensure compliance with safety and hazardous materials regulations and minimize health risks. Prepare safety and hazardous materials information for publication. Represent the Department professionally on occupational safety matters. Prepare and present information on programs, projects, and activities to executives, staff, and at meetings or conferences. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Occupational Safety Specialist V: All of the above plus leading tasks, representing the Department with professionalism, coordinating safety meetings, and analyzing policies and operations to develop improvements and foster collaboration. Minimum Qualifications
Occupational Safety Specialist IV Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Safety, Industrial Technology, Business Admin, or related discipline. 5 years of occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or related experience (full-time or prorated part-time). Related graduate education may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license (driving a state vehicle required). Safety Impact Certificate. Occupational Safety Specialist V Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Safety, Industrial Technology, Business Admin, or related discipline. 5 years of occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or related experience (full-time or prorated part-time). Related graduate education may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license (driving a state vehicle required). Safety Impact Certificate. Must have completed OSHA 500 Trainer Course in Construction and OSHA 501 Trainer Course in Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry. Must have one of the following professional safety designations: ASC; General Industry/Construction Industry Outreach Instructor or CSHO; OHST or ASP or CSP or equivalent certification as determined by OCC. Occupational Safety Specialist IV Extensive knowledge of applicable laws, rules, and regulations. Strong public relations and ability to maintain effective working relationships. Experience in leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring work; training; and using computers. Occupational Safety Specialist V All of the above and experience in training professional and technical staff. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Sedentary work with occasional lifting up to 10 lbs; may lift up to 20 lbs and carry objects up to 10 lbs. Standing for prolonged periods and repetitive movements of wrists/hands/fingers. Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety-impact positions; subject to random drug testing.
