Overview

The Department of Public Safety and Police at Kutztown University invites applicants for a full-time Patrol Officer position (shift to be determined). An employee in this classification provides police services and protection to State System property, grounds, facilities, clientele, employees and the general public. This is basic police services work under the direction of a higher-ranking police officer or the Chief of Police on the Kutztown campus. The work requires Commonwealth of Pennsylvania basic police academy certification and involves making routine decisions and performing actions guided by standard police procedures, statutes, case law and university policies. All assignments involve recognizing the social importance of police functions, providing tactful and courteous treatment of the public, and conscientious and efficient performance under limited supervision. Work is reviewed by a higher classified police officer or designee through personal inspection and review of reports. Responsibilities

Patrol campus by foot, vehicle and/or bike. Respond to calls for assistance (criminal and general). Respond to fire and burglary alarms and to emergencies on campus. Patrol campus property and buildings to ensure security, including locking/unlocking facilities, precluding theft, vandalism and loitering, and reporting security issues. Complete and file reports of crimes and other police matters. Provide assistance to other local law enforcement agencies as directed by the senior officer in charge. Provide basic security and law enforcement services at university events. Provide transportation and escort services to students and visitors on campus. Enforce Commonwealth laws, vehicle code violations, and file appropriate criminal charges as needed. Investigate traffic accidents and prepare reports. Direct traffic, enforce parking regulations, make criminal arrests, serve warrants, transport prisoners, take fingerprints, transport funds for university deposits, testify in court, and attend arraignments and preliminary hearings while enforcing university policies and procedures. Perform routine building checks for safety hazards, mechanical problems and other deficiencies. Maintain knowledge of Commonwealth laws and regulations governing motor vehicle operation and conduct for university employees or visitors, and be prepared for emergency situations. Demonstrate skill in the use and care of offensive and defensive weapons, react quickly and calmly in emergencies, and determine proper courses of action. Enforce laws firmly, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others; understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Note that employees in this classification are designated as essential and may be required to work when an office closing is authorized. *The above duties are typical for this position; the omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar or a logical assignment. Other duties may be required and assigned. Applicant must be Act 120 certified or have Act 120 certification by the anticipated hire date. Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle operator's license. Must be able to work nights, weekends and overtime. Individual will employ independent judgment with some supervision. Position requires the ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper courses of action. Should be knowledgeable about modern police practices, crime investigation, preservation of evidence, and Commonwealth laws and regulations. Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to understand and carry out instructions. All certifications must be kept current. A strong background in community-oriented policing and crime prevention. Experience as a patrol officer with a university/college. Application and Compensation
