Overview Open Recruitment Until Filled. Position(s) located in the Economic Services Division.

Responsibilities

Provide written and spoken Spanish language interpreter services to support the Department of Social Services (DSS) staff.

Translate documents, forms, and educational/informational literature from English to Spanish and Spanish to English; provide interpreter services during telephone calls with Spanish-speaking customers.

Mail correspondence to Spanish-speaking customers regarding agency matters, missed appointments, outreach activities, and other duties as assigned by the DSS staff.

Perform duties related to emergency and/or disaster situations as needed.

Interact with the public and agency staff daily; provide interpretation during home visits and outreach activities; assist with interviewing applicants and completing applications as required.

Assist clerical staff by interpreting the needs of customers and contacting customers by phone or mail with information and instructions from DSS staff; greet public, escort customers, and assist with return appointments.

Composition and typing of letters, memorandums, reports, and other correspondence based on supervisor and staff instructions; translate correspondence from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English; develop Spanish-language materials as requested.

Maintain interpreter appointment logs and electronic records retrievable by date, customer name, and case worker name; keep and maintain necessary files.

Handle mail to other agencies and to Spanish-speaking customers; provide a full range of Spanish linguistic support to LEP customers.

Work under pressure with deadlines and interruptions; manage multiple tasks; participate in crisis intervention as needed (e.g., domestic violence and child abuse cases).

Attend meetings, trainings, and conferences; conduct periodic outreach sessions with the Spanish-speaking community.

Operate office equipment and technology: proficient in desktop and laptop computers; use Microsoft Office for typing; operate a fax machine and Meridian phone system.

Supervision: None exercised.

Qualifications

Graduation from high school or GED and two years of interpreting/translation experience between English and Spanish in a setting requiring knowledge of the programs or services; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Degrees must be from accredited institutions.

Accurate interpreting and translation skills (consecutive and simultaneous); ability to translate between English and Spanish; tactful and diplomatic with a demanding public.

Strong bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish (oral and written), including medical terminology and concepts where applicable.

Ability to recognize and respect cultural differences and provide culturally appropriate services; use courtesy and tact in sensitive public communications.

Strong grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and office terminology to compose and proofread correspondence, reports, and other materials; ability to learn and independently apply laws, rules, and regulations; establish and maintain effective relationships with staff and the public.

Conditions of Employment The selected applicant will be subject to conditions prior to appointment. Conditions may include drug testing per county policy, law enforcement background check, and mandatory participation in emergency or disaster duties. The Cumberland County Department of Social Services dress code applies, including guidelines related to tattoos and body piercing. Official transcripts may be requested; original unopened envelopes must be presented prior to employment start date.
