The salary range for this position is $20.35 - $20.35 (Hourly Rate). Placement within the salary range is dependent on relevant work experience and internal equity. For positions represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range is guided by the rules outlined in the collective bargaining agreement. Position Operating Room Assistant
(ORA) reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Memorial and adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program. It complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and regulatory standards.
This is a rotating, part-time position requiring weekend work, various shifts, and holiday coverage as needed. The orientation schedule varies; after orientation, the permanent shift is Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:00pm-11:30pm, Fridays 1:00pm-9:30pm, and Saturdays 7:00am-3:30pm. The position is part-time, 32 hours per week, 0.8 FTE.
Responsibilities
Surgical Specimens & Blood Products
Transports specimens from OR to universal tube system and tubes to appropriate location
Logs each surgical pathology specimen into pathology log book with time transported and initials
Responds to specimen pick-up requests; ensures timely handling
Picks up Faxitron specimens and routes them to radiology for processing
Performs daily specimen reconciliation with pathology staff
Receives blood products via universal tube system and from the blood bank; places in blood refrigerator and delivers to OR as directed
Picks up/returns blood refrigerator as directed
transports surgical pathology tissue specimens to the path lab and logs handoffs
CSS Responsibilities
Transports soiled case carts to soiled lift and sends for re-sterilization
Operates clean case cart lift and delivers clean carts and instruments to OR suites
Surgical Patient & Belongings Transport
Transports surgical patients; assists in patient lifting, positioning, and transfer as directed by nursing staff
Delivers SDS patient belongings to the correct patient in recovery or nursing units
Equipment/Supplies
Transports lasers, microscopes, and other OR equipment; retrieves supplies from warehouse and delivers to OR rooms
Replenishes supplies and maintains equipment readiness; exchanges oxygen tanks as needed
Moves specialty beds and assists in room readiness and setup
Reviews and reports equipment issues and assists with preventive maintenance tasks
Communications
Demonstrates clear, patient-first thinking and basic reading/writing for documentation
Receives directions from the CDC and nursing staff; maintains fluid communication with the OR team
Responds to the Expediter light in a timely manner
Other Duties/Responsibilities
Demonstrates proactive work completion; supports pods and promotes quality and productivity
Assists in pre-operative skin prep and precepts new employees
Maintains a clean and orderly work environment; on-call as required
Availability
Demonstrates regular and reliable attendance
Qualifications
High School graduate
BLS (Provider) through the American Heart Association
Physical Demand: lift/carry up to 60 pounds; push/pull up to 50 pounds
Preferred
Previous hospital experience in transport or Environmental Service
Excellent customer service skills
