Description of the role as an Operating Room Assistant (ORA) within Northwestern Memorial; aligns with the mission, vision, values, Code of Ethics, Corporate Compliance Program, and applicable policies, procedures, guidelines, regulatory and accreditation standards. Schedule

This rotating full-time position requires weekend work, different shifts, and holiday coverage as needed by the department. Orientation shifts may include 11:00am-7:30pm, 3:00pm-11:30pm, and 11:00pm-7:30am. After orientation, the permanent shift is Monday through Friday 11:00am-7:30pm. There will be call requirements. Responsibilities

Note: The ORA supports the surgical team by providing patient transport and related support services. Surgical Specimens & Blood Products

Transports specimens from OR to universal tube system and tubes to the appropriate location Logs each surgical pathology specimen into pathology log book with transport time and initials Handles specimen service requests via specimen pager in Feinberg OR; responds immediately to pick-up requests Faxitron specimens are picked up from the OR and delivered to radiology for processing Performs daily specimen reconciliation with pathology staff for quality management Receives blood products from the universal tube system and blood bank; places in blood refrigerator and delivers to OR suite as directed, adhering to reconciliation processes Picks up and returns blood refrigerator to and from the blood bank as directed Transport of surgical pathology tissue specimens from OR to path lab; logs in book and performs handoff CSS Responsibilities

Transports soiled case carts to soiled lift and sends to CSS for re-sterilization Operates clean case cart lift and delivers clean case carts and instruments to appropriate OR suites Surgical Patient & Belongings Transport

Transports surgical patients Assists in the OR with patient lifting, positioning, and transfer as directed by nursing staff Delivers SDS patient belongings to correct patient in recovery room and to nursing units as necessary Equipment/Supplies

Transports lasers, microscopes, and other OR equipment from storage areas to the appropriate OR suite and returns to storage when not needed Obtains supplies from warehouse pod cart and delivers to OR rooms Refills warmers with blankets and irrigation solutions to maintain supply Replenishes scrub brushes, masks, and goggles as needed Exchanges empty O2 tanks to full tanks on patient stretchers/beds when needed Moves clean total joint/bariatric/clinitron and specialty beds for intra-operative tasks and notifies control desk coordinator when complete Performs cleaning and readiness tasks for equipment Operates copier and references 4am surgical schedules as per 4am list Cleans patient stretchers as needed Performs intra-op linen change on stretchers outside operating rooms Docks Neptune suction machine after use Picks up and returns supplies from other departments as needed Identifies, isolates, communicates, and documents broken equipment for repair Monitors inventory and replenishes forms when low in POD Places equipment inside and outside of OR suite for next-day cases Assists in readiness and assembly of surgical supplies and room setup Communications

Demonstrates clear and logical thinking Makes sound patient-first decisions Maintains basic reading and writing skills for understanding and documentation Receives directions from CDC and nursing staff regarding quality services Maintains adaptability to perform tasks during interactions with control desk and nursing staff Keeps CDC informed of task completion, delays, changes, and pertinent information for relay to OR team Responds to Expediter “ORA” light in a timely manner Interacts with ORSC or POD charge nurse for pod-specific duties Daily breaks and lunches are assigned based on workflow and communicated by ORSC to the shift RC/manager ORC or POD grease board identifies ORA and communicates duties daily The ORA documents name and pager number on POD grease board daily Pager Responsibilities

Responds immediately when paged Records pager number and name on the POD grease board daily Other Duties/Responsibilities

Demonstrates proactive approach to completing work Gets along with team members and charge staff Assists with pre-operative skin prep Precepts new employees in duties Adheres to universal tube system standards and downtime procedures as needed Must be able to walk and stand for entire shift Supports other pods to promote quality services and productivity Assists with inter-case cleaning when necessary Maintains a clean and orderly work environment Reports availability to shift RC/manager for re-assignment after completing rooms in pod Records and time-stamps activity on ORA log/trip sheet for each shift On-call status required Performs other duties as assigned Availability

Demonstrates regular and reliable attendance Additional Functions

Provides assistance with case setup for assigned rooms Qualifications

Required: High School graduate Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs BLS (Provider level) through the American Heart Association Physical Demand Requirement: Physical demands include lift/carry up to 60 pounds and push/pull up to 50 pounds Preferred

Previous hospital experience preferred in transport or Environmental Service Demonstrates excellent customer service skills Equal Opportunity
