Employees in this classification are Law Enforcement Officers who may be assigned to any of the several divisions within the Department. Deputies are required to perform duties in accordance with the relevant codes and laws of the Commonwealth and County Government. Limited supervision is received, and work is viewed for adherence to Departmental rules and procedures. Some assignments may involve elements of personal danger. The Deputy Sheriff position requires advanced education, training, and/or experience.
Responsibilities:
The safe care custody and control of prisoners to and from court and various commonwealths, states, federal, and county correctional facilities. Security of the courthouses and other county properties. Security of all persons within county owned buildings. Service of criminal warrants and civil writs. Service of Protection Orders which includes the seizing of firearms, weapons, and ammunition, as well as evicting defendants and taking temporary custody of minors. Clerical duties as they relate to specific functions and duties of the Sheriff's Department. Enforcing criminal and vehicle statutes. Conduct Sheriff and Personal Property sales. Perform Levies. Investigate then issue and/or deny licenses to carry firearms, sell firearms, and precious metals. Enforce court orders. Maintain records, prepare and type reports in a timely and professional format. Contact attorneys, defendants, applicants, references, and others via multiple forms of communication. Secure various forms of property. Post various legal notices. Travel inter and intrastate for extraditions. Serve as a representative of the Department at various civic and public functions while at all times conducting themselves in a professional manner. Provide assistance to other law enforcement agencies when law enforcement duties are required. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements:
Be 21 years of age or older. Possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License at the time of job offer. Reside within 60 minutes’ travel time of 200 North River St., Wilkes-Barre PA 18711. Possess a high school diploma or GED Equivalency. Be a citizen of the United States. Be free from convictions of disqualifying criminal offenses. Be able to read at no less than the ninth-grade level. Be personally examined by a physician, physician’s assistant, or certified nurse practitioner who is licensed in this Commonwealth. Be subject to a background investigation conducted by the Luzerne County Sheriff’s Department. Must obtain prior to employment and maintain throughout employment, a Pennsylvania License to Carry Firearms. Training Requirements:
Must successfully complete Luzerne County Sheriff’s Department’s Orientation Training Program. Must have previously completed a recognized Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission (MPOETC) Act 120 basic training course. Must successfully complete annual Act 2 certification update training once initial certification is received. Must successfully complete Luzerne County Sheriff’s Department’s Field Training Program. Must successfully complete Taser certification and re-certifications. Must successfully complete Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) “pepper spray” certification and re-certifications. Must successfully complete Expandable Baton certification and re-certifications. Must successfully complete Tactical Handcuffing certification and re-certifications. Must successfully complete First Aid, CPR, AED, and Naloxone administration certification and re-certifications. Must successfully complete any other training/certifications required by the Sheriff. Physical Demands:
Duties are performed both in an office environment and in the field. The employee may be exposed to varying and extreme weather conditions. Must have the capability to see, hear and speak to effectively communicate with the general public. Must have the strength and ability to apprehend, subdue and restrain criminal offenders. Physical exertion may be required to climb stairs and over walls, run, bend, twist, reach, crawl through tight spaces, kneel in confined areas; sit for prolonged periods of time; move/push/pull or lift heavy objects exceeding 50 lbs. Must have the ability to stand for long periods of time. Work Environment:
Employees risk physical hazard from violence, aggressive and hostile people, a variety of weapons, noise, exposure to bio-hazard communicable diseases, hazardous materials, chemicals, bodily fluids, sharp objects, traffic, drugs, and drug paraphernalia; high risk of civil litigation due to the performance of duties. Work is performed in various weather conditions (extreme temperatures and precipitation). Position requires the ability to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime, when necessary, as well as the ability to work different shifts, including holidays and weekends.
