Purpose and Scope The teaching faculty provide learning activities and support that lead to the achievement of course objectives and contribute to the educational environment of the college and the community. Primary responsibilities include planning, developing and teaching courses within the curriculum to facilitate student learning. Adjunct faculty are hired in a part-time capacity on a semester-by-semester basis, contingent upon needs. Roles may include day, evening, and weekend classes; a maximum of five classes per academic year.
Essential Job Functions
Teaches ESOL courses at a variety of times and locations
Creates engaging lessons that promote student involvement and application of the material
Submits required college reports and forms in a timely manner
Utilizes a course syllabus for each course, following established institutional guidelines
Meets with and advises students either before or after class or by appointment, electronic communication, or other appropriate methods
Evaluates students to measure their progress in achieving course objectives and informs students in a timely manner of their progress
Maintains professional relationships with students, colleagues, and the community
Attends meetings, trainings, and orientations as required
Responsible for other reasonable related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Mastery of course content
Demonstrated leadership skills; style that emphasizes collaboration, teamwork, and facilitation
Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
Ability to appreciate alternative viewpoints; ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people
Interest in interdisciplinary teaching, service learning, learning technologies, course development, and adult learning methodologies including collaborative learning, learning communities and distance learning
Commitment to academic excellence, exceptional service and providing a dynamic climate for lifelong learning
Ability to develop and implement instructional approaches such as service learning/civic engagement, learning communities, and effective use of technology
Ability to engage students with effective strategies
Physical Abilities The work is sedentary; may involve light walking, standing, bending, carrying small items, or driving. No special physical demands required.
Work Schedule and Conditions
Equipment includes PC workstation, calculator, phone and general office equipment
Interface with internal and external contacts as needed
Work is performed in a climate-controlled classroom and/or lab with minimal safety hazards
Hours vary by class time; instructors must meet scheduled classes and be available to students outside instruction
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or higher in TESOL/TESL/TEFL, Second Language Acquisition, Linguistics, or English where English is taught as a foreign language OR Bachelor's degree or higher with 12 hours of coursework in TESOL/TESL/TEFL, Second Language Acquisition, & Linguistics OR Bachelor's degree or higher with secondary/postsecondary TESOL/TESL/TEFL certificate, CELTA, or DELTA OR Bachelor's degree or higher with 3 years ESOL teaching experience at secondary/postsecondary level OR Bachelor's degree or higher with evidence of 12 hours of coursework in at least 3 of the following:
language teaching methodologies
the nature of language/languages (e.g., introduction to linguistics)
the structure of English (e.g., syntax, phonology, morphology, discourse)
second language acquisition
intercultural communication (e.g., sociolinguistics, cross-cultural studies)
practicum experience
Salary: $55.44 per contact hour.
