Position limited to current contractual and regular Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services employees only who are currently on the eligibility list. In addition, applicant must be a current defensive tactics instructor.
Main Purpose of Job The incumbent instruct a designed curriculum within the assigned Correctional Entrance Level Training Academy in order to ensure compliance with standards established by the Professional Development and Training Division and Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC), or other regulatory agency having jurisdiction. The incumbent will also assist academy students as mentors or coaches to resolve any logistical or programmatic issues to insure all curriculums is disseminated in a professional and adult based learning manner. The incumbent is the first contact with all newly hired Correctional Officers, therefore must exhibit a high level of professionalism both within and outside the classroom setting. As a CO III, the incumbent has lead responsibility for newly hired Correctional Officers assigned to the CELTP program and CO II instructors.
Position Duties
Curriculum delivery: Daily instruction of CELTP curriculum and practical training as well as coaching and mentoring assigned students and instructors.
Operational Compliance: The incumbent shall insure that he/she maintains and instructs all curriculum and practical training within full compliance with relevant standards established by the Professional Development and Training Division, Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC) or any other regulatory agency having jurisdiction.
Logistical Support: The incumbent shall make recommendations on equipment and materials needs for safe and effective delivery of correctional academy training. The incumbent shall also assist the academy students to resolve any logistical or programmatic issues as they arise.
Post-Academy Responsibility: The incumbent shall insure all pertinent post-academy information is complete and accurate.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High School diploma or high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation.
Experience: Three years of experience as a Correctional Officer involving the custody and security of adult inmates.
Notes: The above educational requirement is set by the Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209. Candidates may substitute additional education at an accredited college or university at the rate of sixty credit hours for one year of the required experience provided that a minimum of 15 credit hours are in the field of criminal justice or related social sciences. Candidates may substitute equivalent State experience in other classifications within the correctional field which involve daily contact with and custody of inmates for the required experience. Qualifying experience must be in a classification where the salary is comparable to that of Correctional Officer II. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional classifications or correctional specialty codes in the criminal justice field of work equivalent to a Correctional Officer II on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
Licenses, Registrations and Certifications
Employee may be required to operate a motor vehicle. Must possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in Maryland.
Employee may be required to operate busses for the transportation of inmates. Must acquire a Class B Commercial Driver's License with passenger and air brakes endorsements valid in Maryland.
Special Requirements
Must be U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Must complete a background investigation.
Must pass an oral interview.
Must complete a physical examination.
Employees hired or reinstated on or after July 1, 2016 must complete Entrance Level Firearms Training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission and demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis.
Employees subject to call-in 24 hours a day must provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
Employees subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
