Position Summary : The Pre-Admissions Testing Advanced Practice Professional (APP), which may include Nurse Practitioners (NPs) or Physician Assistants (PAs), plays a key role in ensuring patients are medically optimized and safely prepared for surgical and procedural interventions. The APP conducts comprehensive pre-operative evaluations, coordinates necessary testing, and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to identify and mitigate risks prior to surgery. This role emphasizes patient education, evidence-based decision making, and seamless care transitions to improve perioperative outcomes and enhance patient experience. The APP participates in the education of residents and medical/nursing students.
Minimum Qualifications For Nurse Practitioner
Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with Master’s Degree in Nursing
National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers
Licensure, or eligibility for licensure, as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia
CNOR Certification
BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department
Department Specific: APRNs requesting to be privileged as First Assists in perioperative services will be required to have ANOR approved RNFA Certification
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) at the discretion of the department
Eligible new graduates will be considered
Minimum Qualifications For Physician Assistant
Bachelor’s Degree as Physician Assistant, or Master’s Degree as Physician Assistant required
Graduate of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant (PA) training program required
Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants required
Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine
BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) at the discretion of the department
Master’s level degree as Physician Assistant preferred
Acute care, surgical or orthopedic experience preferred
Core Duties and Responsibilities
The following describes the general nature of work performed by people assigned to this position and is not an all-inclusive list of duties. Other duties may be assigned.
Manage comprehensive and individualized care for orthopedic patients and their families in the inpatient, post-discharge, and ambulatory settings.
Complete daily rounds; perform pre-procedure evaluations; participate in peri-operative patient care including first assisting in the operative suite as applicable.
Complete integrated assessments; order and interpret tests as appropriate; collaborate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings.
Develop comprehensive, individualized plans of care including education, perioperative planning, discharge planning, and referrals to other team members as needed.
Document care clearly in the medical record and coordinate services and tests required for outpatient follow-up.
Demonstrate critical thinking, diagnostic reasoning, and safe use of equipment; ensure actions are aligned with scientific principles and standards of care.
Educate patients, families, and staff; participate in teaching and learning activities; promote patient- and family-centered care.
Collaborate with leaders and staff to improve patient outcomes and participate in committees or program development as appropriate.
Participate in inter-disciplinary approaches to care and professional development; serve as a role model and resource for staff.
Document plan of care, interventions, and evaluations in the patient record following policy and compliance standards.
Assist in collection of outcome measures and participate in quality improvement activities as applicable.
