About Mentor A Promise Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, academic enrichment, literacy development, creative expression, and housing initiatives, MAP creates safe, consistent, and empowering spaces where young people can thrive.
Location: Remote and/or New York City Type: Volunteer (Unpaid)
Role Overview MAP’s training division focuses on developing the capacity of mentors, educators, and volunteers who work directly with young people. The Training Specialist will play a vital role in designing, implementing, and evaluating professional development programs that strengthen mentor effectiveness, build trauma-informed awareness, and enhance learning outcomes across all MAP programs.
Key Responsibilities
Design and implement engaging, evidence-based training sessions for mentors, volunteers, and staff
Develop materials, toolkits, and e-learning resources focused on literacy, mentoring, trauma-informed care, and social-emotional learning
Assess training needs through feedback, observation, and program evaluation
Collaborate with program leads to integrate training into MAP’s yearlong curriculum and mentorship model
Track attendance, evaluate outcomes, and document participant progress
Provide individual or group coaching to strengthen mentor performance
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practices in youth development and educational training
Check and respond to emails daily, ensuring all responses are completed within 48 hours
Take responsibility for performance improvement by identifying gaps in training delivery and implementing innovative solutions
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Human Resources, Psychology, Social Work, Communication, or related field (Master’s preferred)
Experience designing and delivering training, workshops, or educational programs
Strong understanding of mentoring practices, SEL (Social-Emotional Learning), and trauma-informed approaches
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong facilitation and presentation abilities
Proficiency with Google Workspace, Canva, or other tools for virtual learning design
Collaborative and adaptable, with the ability to engage diverse audiences and learning styles
Commitment to MAP’s mission of equity, empowerment, and community transformation
Commitment
Volunteer role requiring approximately 5–10 hours per week
Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
Remote with opportunities for in-person facilitation in New York City
