About the Department

The Academic Advising and Student Achievement Center supports Western’s mission and invites applications from women, people of color, people with disabilities, veterans, and other candidates from underrepresented backgrounds and with diverse experiences. The center provides services to support students’ academic advising needs, help in navigating campus resources, and gain understanding of Western’s academic policies. About the Position

The Academic/Career Advisor works within a team of professional and student advisors in the Academic Advising & Student Achievement Center (AASAC), the central undergraduate advising office at Western Washington University. This role uses a strengths-based and student-centered advising philosophy to assist a diverse population of students. AASAC services focus on all undergraduate students with a target toward supporting first year and transfer students, students undecided about academic goals, and students experiencing academic difficulties. The advisor helps students develop academic and career plans aligned with their interests, abilities, and aspirations and to utilize available resources. The role also supports mandatory Advising & Registration sessions for new students admitted to Western throughout the year. This is a full-time, 12-month position that reports to a Senior Academic/Career Advisor. Some evening and weekend work is required and staff are expected to support Advising & Registration activities during fall registration and surrounding terms. Position Duties/Responsibilities Direct Student Advising

— Provide individual advising to assist with academic planning, adding/dropping courses, major/minor exploration, tracking graduation requirements, understanding university policies, and related activities. Interactions should develop students’ critical thinking, problem solving, and independent learning skills. Maintain awareness of academic resources including University Catalog Programs of Study, policies, department websites, and campus resources. Assist students in the major exploration process, including knowledge of career exploration resources and connecting with department advisors. Assist students in low academic standing to identify strengths and navigate resources to promote success. Provide advising support for students being readmitted to Western to develop academic plans upon return. Provide accurate and timely referrals to university offices and resources as needed. Support Targeted Outreach Efforts

— Assist outreach campaigns that support uniquely identified student groups; engage in outreach with academic departments and other offices to promote integrated advising and inclusivity. Group Advising and Workshops

— Collaborate in planning and delivering Advising & Registration sessions for new students; conduct workshops addressing academic success and personal development; participate in workshops/panels as requested; assist in coordinating special events and programs. Administrative Functions and Professional Development

— Document advising appointments; utilize tools such as Degree Works, EAB Navigate, SharePoint, Zoom, Banner, and Microsoft 365; attend meetings; serve on committees; pursue professional development focusing on access, diversity, equity, and inclusion; perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree (completed by start date) Minimum of one year’s experience in academic advising, educational planning, or academic success coaching at the post-secondary level Demonstrated experience supporting diverse, traditionally underrepresented or under-served populations Ability to work effectively with diverse staff and faculty as a team member Strong verbal and written communication skills, including presenting, advising, and outreach Experience using technology such as Microsoft 365, Teams, and Zoom Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in Student Affairs Administration, Education, Counseling, or related field Experience advising in an office serving first year and undeclared students Ability to integrate academic advising and career development Experience with student records systems and advising platforms Experience using the EAB Navigate platform Fluent in two or more languages Conditions of Employment
