Overview
Respiratory Unit Manager - RN (Healthcare) Position Summary: The Unit Manager (Respiratory Unit) is responsible for the daily operations, supervision, and clinical oversight of the respiratory care unit. This position ensures high-quality patient care, regulatory compliance, and effective coordination among staff, residents, families, and leadership. The Unit Manager provides leadership, mentorship, and support to the nursing and respiratory care team while fostering a positive, professional, and patient-centered environment. Responsibilities
Clinical & Operational Oversight
Oversee daily operations of the respiratory unit, ensuring safe, effective, and compassionate resident care. Monitor clinical practices and ensure adherence to physician orders, facility policies, and state/federal regulations. Supervise ventilator and tracheostomy care management in collaboration with respiratory therapists and nursing staff. Conduct regular rounds to assess resident status, unit needs, and staff performance. Ensure timely completion of care plans, assessments, and documentation in the EMR system.
Leadership & Staff Management
Supervise, mentor, and evaluate nursing staff (RNs, LPNs, CNAs) assigned to the respiratory unit. Provide education, guidance, and performance feedback to promote professional growth and accountability. Coordinate staff assignments and workload to maintain safe staffing levels and balanced coverage. Participate in hiring, training, and onboarding of new staff members. Address performance issues and collaborate with HR/leadership on progressive discipline when necessary.
Quality & Compliance
Maintain compliance with Department of Health, CMS, and facility standards. Monitor infection control practices and ensure proper PPE usage within the respiratory unit. Participate in audits, care plan meetings, and interdisciplinary team reviews. Track and report unit-specific metrics such as ventilator weaning rates, hospital readmissions, and resident outcomes.
Resident & Family Relations
Serve as a primary contact for residents and families within the respiratory unit. Communicate updates regarding resident care, progress, and care plan changes. Promote a positive, supportive, and compassionate environment for residents and their families.
Qualifications
Current RN license in good standing (required). Minimum 2-3 years of nursing experience, preferably in respiratory/ventilator care or critical care. Prior supervisory or management experience strongly preferred. Strong clinical assessment, organizational, and leadership skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities. Ability to manage multiple priorities and remain calm in high-pressure situations. Schedule & Reporting
Full-time, salaried position with weekend on-call rotation. Reports directly to the Director of Nursing and collaborates closely with the Respiratory Therapy Department. Physical & Working Conditions
Work is primarily performed in a skilled nursing/respiratory unit setting. Requires ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the unit for extended periods. May involve exposure to infectious materials, chemicals, and resident conditions.
