Biosafety and Laboratory Specialist
to support the CDC. This role is essential for ensuring the safety, quality, and compliance of laboratory operations related to respiratory virus diagnostics, surveillance, and research. The specialist will contribute to the development and implementation of laboratory protocols, quality management systems, and biosafety practices in alignment with CDC standards. Roles and Responsibilities
Perform molecular assays to detect, type, and characterize respiratory viruses and viral vaccine preventable diseases. Design, evaluate, and distribute diagnostic platforms for the detection of COVID and other respiratory viruses. Participate in burden of disease and etiology studies of respiratory diseases. Work within guidelines of auditing bodies such as CMS or CAP. Promote laboratory safety, quality management systems (QMS), and effective specimen management. Draft SOPs, worksheets, job aids, validation plans, and validation reports. Maintain medical clearance for laboratory work, including respiratory fit testing. Prepare documentation and laboratories for internal and external audits. Maintain laboratory records and contribute to scientific publications and presentations. Perform serological surveillance and develop new serological assays for respiratory viruses. Conduct advanced cellular immunological assessments and develop monoclonal antibodies. Generate and characterize respiratory virus isolates and perform neutralizing antibody assays. Adapt molecular techniques to automated platforms and perform advanced sequencing assays. Support pathogen discovery and characterization of novel emerging viruses. Basic Qualifications
Mid-Level: BA/BS with 3–10+ years’ experience, MS with 0–7+ years’ experience, or PhD with 0–3+ years’ experience. Desired Qualifications
Work experience in the scientific field, including microbiologist, research microbiologist, biologist, health scientist or related field (preferably in a public health setting). Knowledge of and experience working with clinical data and human specimens. Knowledge and experience of sequencing assays and sequencing platforms. Expertise in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook). Ability to identify gaps in existing resources and to be flexible. Interpersonal communication, scientific communication, and strong proofreading and organizational skills. Experience working with CDC staff at multiple organizational levels.
