Position Summary This position provides a welcoming and inclusive environment by providing customer service to a diverse campus community of employees and students. Working with diverse students, parents, faculty, staff, and other involved parties by providing the highest level of student facing front-line customer service. We dedicate each day to student success and retention, as well as equity, diversity, and inclusion. This is a full-time, 12 month, AFSCME position. Tour of Duty: Sunday-Monday 2:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m., Tuesday-Thursday 10:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m. Days off: Friday and Saturday. Location: Campus Wide. This is an essential position. This position will operate, maintain and/or repair high pressure boilers and auxiliary machinery and equipment; clean machinery and equipment; respond to emergencies or equipment breakdowns; maintain adequate supply of fuel; and perform related work as required. The basic purpose of this work is to ensure that assigned power plant facility is operated and maintained safely and efficiently. Initial assignment is subject to change according to institutional needs. Responsibilities Checks, inspects and monitors machinery, equipment and systems to ensure safe, efficient and pollution-free operation. Operates machinery and equipment such as chillers, boilers, generators, pumps and valves to provide power. Repairs, overhauls and maintains machinery and equipment; conducts minor electrical or plumbing repairs as needed to keep equipment operating efficiently. Cleans and maintains work areas and plant machinery and equipment to ensure safety and efficiency. Responds to emergencies and breakdowns; evaluates problems; determines repairs and shutdown needs; operates the power plant as required to ensure uninterrupted service. Oversees fuel oil acquisition, storage and use; monitors fuel levels and treats fuel oil to prevent corrosion and ensure availability of clean burning fuel oil. Performs related duties such as inspecting operating systems, calibrating controls, reviewing manuals, and setting work priorities. Performs other duties as required. Qualifications Possession of a Third Class or higher Stationary Engineer’s license (Massachusetts) as per Chapter 146. Knowledge of industrial heating systems and pneumatic controls used in power plant operations. Knowledge of electrical practice, pumps, pipefitting, water treatment chemicals, safety practices, and high/low pressure boilers. Knowledge of firing and operating coal or oil-fired boilers and auxiliary equipment. Knowledge of fuel storage and handling methods; ability to read, write, and comprehend English; ability to follow written and oral instructions. Ability to lift heavy objects, work in group settings, and maintain accurate records; ability to give clear oral instructions. All other appropriate duties as listed in the State Job Specifications. Preferred Qualifications A current and valid Massachusetts Driver’s License.
