Overview The University of New Mexico (UNM) Radiation Safety Office is seeking a results-driven professional to join our team as a Senior Health Physicist. The Radiation Safety team is responsible for ensuring the safety of individuals using ionizing radiation at the UNM campus and in other locations where these items may be used by University faculty and staff. Our objective is the protection of people and the environment from unnecessary exposure to radiation. We accomplish this by providing a radiation protection program to the University community which is in compliance with both Federal and State radiation protection regulations.
Responsibilities
Oversight of UNM personnel monitoring and bioassay programs.
Oversight of the radioactive material research laboratory audit program.
Perform radioactive material inventory reconciliation for UNM research laboratories.
Oversight of the laboratory close-out survey and equipment clearance programs.
Oversight of radioactive waste processing and disposal.
Oversight of the radioactive gauge, generally licensed device, and sealed source inventory and leak test programs.
Oversight of survey meter calibration programs.
Conduct radiation safety training. Develop and implement online training modules.
Review research, human use research, and animal research protocols using ionizing radiation sources.
Process radiation use permits and human research protocols for review by the radiation safety officer and UNM Radiation Control Committee.
Provide health physics support for radiation therapies conducted at UNM.
Provide health physics support for nuclear reactor operations.
Perform shielding evaluations.
Perform radioactive effluent evaluations and clearance calculations.
Provide support for HDR source exchanges and use of accelerators by UNM Radiation Oncology.
Respond to and manage radiological emergencies.
Develop policies and procedures.
Serve as the Human Use Subcommittee administrative coordinator.
Conditions of Employment
Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in health physics, physics, chemistry, biology, engineering or a related field; at least 5 years of direct experience related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
BSc in health physics, physical science, or engineering
4 years of experience in an academic medical center setting
