About the Department The
UNC Rex Holly Springs Emergency Department
is a
24-bed unit
providing high-quality, patient-centered care in a growing community. Our department includes a dedicated
Results Waiting Area
to safely monitor lower-acuity and overflow patients,
two large resuscitation rooms
(including one tailored for pediatric emergencies), and
five triage/exam rooms
for rapid assessment and care.
Our
multidisciplinary team
delivers emergency care for both
adults and children , managing a broad spectrum of needs including life-threatening conditions, acute injuries and illnesses, and behavioral health crises.
Role Overview: Clinical Nurse Team Leader (TL RN) As a
Team Leader RN
in the Emergency Department, you’ll balance advanced clinical care with leadership responsibilities—supporting staff development, optimizing patient outcomes, and ensuring operational excellence. This position is ideal for a skilled ED nurse ready to expand into leadership while maintaining direct patient care responsibilities.
Time Allocation:
Approximately
70% Clinical / 30% Administrative
Key Responsibilities Clinical (70%)
Provide expert, high-quality nursing care in a high-acuity emergency setting
Serve as Charge Nurse during shifts, overseeing patient flow, assignments, and clinical prioritization
Precept and mentor new team members, ensuring a smooth onboarding experience
Support critical decision-making at the bedside and promote clinical best practices
Collaborate with physicians, EMS, behavioral health, and interdisciplinary teams to deliver safe, timely care
Administrative (30%)
Participate in unit-based and hospital-wide quality improvement and shared governance initiatives
Assist with staff education, competency training, and continuing education efforts
Conduct staff check-ins and provide coaching, feedback, and support
Perform patient experience rounding to enhance care and satisfaction
Partner with leadership on staffing, team engagement, and retention strategies

Summary Serves as nursing Team Leader. Provides education, training, and oversight to assigned nursing staff.
Education and Professional Development – Coordinate, design, and implement educational programs to meet identified learning needs of staff, patients, and families. Promote and ensure staff participation in continuing education, orientation, competency, in-service, and staff development offerings. Participate in development and implementation of competency initiatives. Serve as an area of specialty consultant in the design of educational programs.
Evaluation – Evaluate patient progress and revise plan accordingly. Maintain accountability for carrying out components of the plan. Work with manager to ensure care on unit is in accordance with policies and procedures.
Implementation – Promote an environment that values diversity, open communication, teamwork, and exceptional service. Ensure that appropriate care and services are available to patients, clients, and families for assigned shift. Facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration in patient/client care planning to achieve desired patient outcomes. Coordinate care with interdisciplinary team members. Demonstrate and role model clinical expertise in specified patient population and share expertise with other staff.
Leadership – Create and promote an environment conducive to recruiting and retaining staff. Provide feedback to Manager/Supervisor and Director to assist in hiring, promoting, transferring, and terminating staff. Assist Nurse Manager by providing assigned staff with performance feedback and opportunity to set professional goals. Model and promote behaviors that effectively give continual feedback to staff and colleagues.
Assessment – Synthesize data from complex situations to determine priorities for care. Include appropriate physical, psychosocial, and educational needs. Synthesize assessment data into meaningful whole prior to communication with others. Assess and anticipate discharge needs of individual patients and families. Develop relationships with families that promote their ability to advocate for the patient and their own needs. Work with manager to demonstrate specialization needs to serve the patient population.
Planning – Establish and promote standards of excellence for areas of responsibility and ensure consistent implementation by staff. Provide input about trends related to program development, space needs, and fiscal realities. Ensure appropriate and adequate clinical staffing and skill mix to meet patient care needs on own shift and upcoming shift. Effectively use clinical and financial information to assist Nurse Manager to establish and meet budgetary goals. Collaborate with Nurse Manager to implement strategies to increase revenue and cost‑effectively manage personnel, supply, and equipment resources. Evaluate the impact of strategic fiscal changes on quality outcomes. Assist Nurse Manager to ensure that internal and external regulatory standards are met or exceeded.
Research and Performance Improvement – Collaborate with Nurse Manager to evaluate research that is applicable to practice and promote changes in standards of care as appropriate. Guide research development and implementation. Utilize resources in asking research questions and applying appropriate research methods. Share knowledge with colleagues through publication, presentations, or other means. Develop, implement, and evaluate new and creative approaches to meeting goals. Lead, participate, and promote performance improvement initiatives that focus on identified patient safety or quality of care opportunities.

Education Requirements:
Graduate of Accredited Nursing Program. Bachelor's degree (BSN) required.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
Must have NC RN Licensure and BCLS. Professional certification relevant to the practice area and on the ANCC Magnet approved list within the probationary period of employment.
Professional Experience Requirements:
Minimum one year experience working as a licensed RN.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret clinical information and technical procedures. Ability to document clinical information. Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions from patients, physicians, family members, and other Rex staff. Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
