Overview
Location: Washington Hospital Center Department: Family Medicine Status: Full-time, 40-hours per week Schedule: Monday-Friday, Day/Evening (8:30am-5:30pm) This Full-Time position will be represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 722. Provides a variety of moderately complex medical office support/clerical/secretarial functions for one or more medical, professional, or research staff. Responsibilities
Receives and screens telephone callers and visitors to the office. Responds to inquiries, referring technical questions to appropriate staff. Takes and forwards messages. Schedules patients\' appointments and assists in scheduling with other medical offices. Coordinates physician(s) calendar, including patient appointments, surgeries, meetings, etc. Transcribes dictation including patient narratives and/or discharge summaries, general correspondence, and memoranda. Types letters, requisitions, reports, etc. from handwritten copy and/or notes. Answers requests for new prescriptions and refills; submits requests to physician for authorization. Calls in prescriptions to pharmacy. Completes preliminary registration for new patients and updates information for existing patients (inpatients and/or outpatients); obtains necessary recertification/verification/referrals, signatures, copies of insurance cards, etc. May coordinate pre-admission testing. Enters physician charges into billing system, ensuring appropriate insurance coverage and providing Patient Billing Services with referrals, authorizations, and operative reports. May review ICD-10 codes; collaborates with medical personnel to reconcile errors. Responds to billing inquiries from patients and/or Patient Billing Services. Accepts co-payments; may deposit payments or forward them to appropriate personnel. Establishes and maintains a variety of files, records, logs, charts, etc. including departmental files. Retrieves files, records, charts, and/or information as necessary. Receives, opens, and date stamps incoming mail. Reviews, sorts, and/or directs mail to the appropriate person in accordance with departmental policy. May prepare exam room(s) between patients, based on procedure, and may assist physician in exam/procedure. Maintains office supplies and may assist in maintaining medical supply inventory for the department. May compile information for procedure and on-call schedules. Posts and distributes schedules to appropriate personnel, revising schedules as necessary. Minimum Qualifications
Education High School Diploma or GED required May require up to 1 year of technical or other specialized training; and, depending on assigned department, training in secretarial/medical office support (e.g.: word processing, medical terminology, medical insurance/billing, etc.). Experience 1 to 3 years experience as a secretary, preferably in a doctor's office or medical environment required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requires the ability to read and write; knowledge of grammar, and arithmetic including fractions and decimals. May require the use of standard office/medical equipment (i.e., typewriter, personal computer, data terminal, on-line printer, calculator, telephone, facsimile, copier, sterilizing equipment, blood pressure cuff, or tables); the preparation, comparison or checking of reports, records and related data; and basic use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings and knowledge of their application.
