The START Center for Cancer Research (“START”) is the world’s largest early phase site network, dedicated to oncology clinical research. START has provided access to cutting edge trials across the US and Europe, with research facilities in the United States and in Spain, Portugal, and Ireland. START represents a large roster of Principal Investigators (PIs) across eight clinical trial sites, committed to accelerating passage from trials to treatments and delivering hope to patients, families, and physicians globally. Clinic Nurse

who will assist clinic providers with examination, evaluation, and triage of individuals participating in research protocols at START.

Essential Responsibilities

Patient Care

Perform telephone triage assessments of patients on trial when necessary.

Provide patient education regarding participation in a clinical trial, chemotherapy/immunotherapy/investigational agent administration, and potential side effects.

Enter patient history into the Electronic Medical Record based on records received and patient-provided history.

Perform basic patient assessment including physical exam, vital signs, ECGs, and other assessments as needed.

Observe participant’s general well-being using nursing assessment skills; document and take appropriate action as needed.

Provide patients with visit summaries and ensure the dignity, health, safety, and welfare of participants.

Coordinate patient care with internal and external staff and respond to emergency situations based on nursing standards.

Provide coverage for Infusion Nurse as directed by management.

Planning and problem-solving tasks

Prepare for clinic day ensuring necessary supplies and results are available.

Assist with prescription refills and with entry and completion of quality standards for EHR/PQRS.

Communicating tasks

Provide telephone triage.

Assist with training and mentorship of less-tenured staff.

Complete preauthorization forms for medications and procedures.

Assist in the referral process to specialists.

Communicate with peers and other departments in a manner that positively affects patient services and staff morale, and demonstrate sensitivity to cultural diversity, age-specific needs, and confidentiality.

Protocol management tasks

Work with the physician to ensure necessary labs and assessments are performed and results obtained.

Ensure orders are completed in a timely manner.

Technical and quality tasks

Demonstrate working knowledge of a variety of healthcare equipment.

Contribute as a team member to optimize workflow within the cancer center.

Demonstrate time management and effective written and verbal communication skills.

Education & Experience

High School Diploma or GED.

Licensed Registered Nurse in the practicing state.

1 year of oncology experience.

Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification, and American Heart Association certificate.

Experience working with Microsoft Office (Teams, Excel, Outlook, Word).

Preferred Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree of Nursing.

Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN).

ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate completed within the last 5 years or within the first year of employment.

Clinical Trials experience.

Physical & Travel Requirements

Able to perform manual tasks requiring fine motor skills.

Able to lift 50 pounds.

Able to stand and/or sit for prolonged periods.

Able to bend/stretch and input/retrieve information from a computer.
