Summary / Objective A shipyard Marine Chemist focuses on ensuring safe work environments for hot work, confined space entry, and other tasks involving potentially hazardous materials. The Marine Chemist analyzes the air quality, identifies potential hazards, and certifies spaces as safe before work can begin. This role is critical in preventing fires, explosions, and toxic exposures in shipyard settings.

Duties (Not Limited To)

Identify air quality using specialized equipment to test air in confined spaces for the presence of harmful gases, vapors, and other contaminants.

Certify tanks and spaces as safe to enter after use, ensuring they are gas‑free before hot work (Welding, etc.) can begin.

Identify potential hazards, including chemicals, flammable materials, and environmental risks, to ensure compliance with regulations.

Collect and analyze samples from ships and shipyards to assess air quality, identify contaminants, and ensure compliance with regulations.

Assist in developing and implementing safety protocols and procedures, including emergency response plans.

Maintain detailed records of work, prepare reports, and communicate findings to relevant parties.

Will be involved in training personnel on proper safety procedures and providing consultation on hazardous materials management.

Will work with shipyard personnel to ensure safety protocols are followed.

Education / Experience Required

While a bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related field is often preferred, a strong background in chemistry and industrial hygiene, along with 1‑2 years work experience, can be sufficient.

Understand the Naval Ship Repair requirements and working environment.

Experience in shipyards, particularly with confined space entry, hot work, or industrial hygiene, is highly valued.

Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills are essential.

Proficiency in standard office computer software.

Must have a valid California driver's license.

Preferred

Certification as a Certified Marine Chemist (CMC) is preferred.

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work This is a full‑time position requiring 40+ hours per week. M‑F 0600‑1430 (or as otherwise assigned by General Manager) with pre‑scheduled overtime as needed.

Work Environment This job operates in an office environment and shipyard work environment.

Travel This position may require ability to travel.

Must have the ability to enter confined spaces and work in potentially hazardous environments requiring physical stamina and the ability to wear personal protective equipment.
