About the Role As the Sustainability Manager, you will lead Whitman College’s efforts to embed sustainability in everyday operations and long‑term strategy. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Facilities Services, you will collaborate with students, staff, faculty, community partners, and institutional committees to reduce environmental impact, promote sustainable practices, and align with the College’s Campus Sustainability Plan.

What You’ll Be Doing Campus Sustainability Leadership

Lead the implementation of the Campus Sustainability Plan (2024) and support long‑term energy management initiatives.

Develop, plan, and administer programs and events in partnership with community organizations, departments, and student groups.

Manage sustainability operations such as the EcoReps Program, the Sustainability Revolving Loan Fund, the Bike Share Program, and the Zero‑Waste Initiative.

Support the Energy Renewal Development and Decarbonization Plan (ERDP) and track progress toward key goals.

Ensure all sustainability practices are inclusive, equitable, and accessible to the entire community.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

Represent Whitman in regional and national sustainability coalitions, including the Washington‑Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Coalition.

Serve as staff liaison to student organizations and chair the President’s Sustainability Advisory Committee (PSAC).

Identify and steward donors and funding opportunities supporting sustainability programs and infrastructure.

Oversee required sustainability reporting (AASHE STARS, EPA Green Power Partnership, LEED certifications, etc.).

Collaborate across departments to integrate sustainability and energy‑saving measures into daily operations and campus construction projects.

Lead sustainability communications and outreach, including reports, presentations, and digital media.

Operations & Supervision

Supervise one part‑time professional staff member, as well as student employees and interns.

Manage utility records and coordinate with providers to optimize usage, pricing, and schedules.

Oversee compliance with sustainability‑related standards and college policies.

Develop and distribute educational materials on commuting, conservation, and sustainable practices.

Evolving Responsibilities

Contribute to evolving institutional priorities that advance Whitman’s sustainability and facilities goals.

Pursue professional development opportunities to stay current with sustainability practices and trends in higher education.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in sustainability, environmental studies, facilities management, or a related field.

At least 2 years of experience implementing sustainability initiatives in higher education, business, government, or a similar setting.

Valid driver’s license meeting Whitman’s driving eligibility criteria.

Strong analytical, communication, and project management skills.

Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in a sustainability‑related field.

At least 4 years of experience in sustainability program management or related work.

Experience in higher education.

Familiarity with sustainability reporting frameworks (e.g., AASHE STARS, LEED).

Experience producing sustainability reports, newsletters, and digital content.

Working Conditions

Occasional evenings and weekends for events and programs.

Occasional travel for professional development or partnership activities.

Required presence on campus during closures or essential personnel duties.
