Overview

The Labor and Delivery Physician Assistant assists, monitors, and manages the day-to-day needs of patients as directed by a supervising physician. The role performs the duties of a Physician Assistant in accordance with customary medical standards and the hospital’s clinical policies. Obstetric/Women’s Health experience is required. Labor & Delivery Responsibilities

Evaluate and triage patients presenting to Labor & Delivery (L&D). Perform comprehensive history and physical examinations and develop initial management plans in collaboration with residents and attending physicians. Interpret fetal heart rate tracings and communicate findings to the care team. Manage uncomplicated laboring patients, including cervical examinations, ordering appropriate medications, and providing patient education and support. Perform scope-of-practice procedures. Serve as first‑assistant in Cesarean sections and other obstetric surgical procedures when residents are in protected time. Assist attending physicians and residents with vaginal deliveries. Manage the immediate postpartum period—assess for hemorrhage and urinary retention. Conduct postpartum rounds, addressing common postpartum issues. Provide thorough patient education on postpartum recovery and contraception. Facilitate patient discharges, ensuring all necessary prescriptions, follow‑up appointments, instructions, discharge summaries, and reconciliations are in place. Serve as a consistent clinical resource and point of continuity for nursing staff and residents, helping to orient new team members to unit protocols. Ensure seamless handoffs and communication during shift changes. Participate in daily team huddles, rounds, and department meetings. General Physician Assistant Responsibilities

Provide medical services under the supervision of a licensed physician, consistent with PA education, training, and experience. Perform accurate, complete, and relevant history and physical assessments appropriate to the patient’s age, gender, and clinical status. Order, perform, and interpret laboratory tests, diagnostic studies, and procedures in collaboration with physicians and consultants as appropriate. Manage general medical and surgical conditions based on comprehensive knowledge of etiologies, risk factors, pathophysiology, and therapeutic indications and contraindications. Prescribe medications safely and effectively, providing patient education as needed. Seek opportunities to promote HMH PA practice recognition through conferences, publications, and presentations. Provide patient‑ and family‑centered, compassionate care that promotes health and disease treatment. Practice in accordance with Medical Staff rules, bylaws, and privileges. Apply evidence‑based medicine to analyze and improve patient care practices and outcomes. Evaluate patient/family transition of care planning, considering resource utilization, cost, quality, safety, and self‑management promotion. Demonstrate clinical expertise through advanced assessment and procedural skills pertinent to PA practice. Translate best practices into clinical practice by evaluating current protocols and standards of care. Provide culturally sensitive and educationally appropriate health education to patients and families. Facilitate coordinated care and clear communication among all team members through daily interdisciplinary rounds. Advocate for patients and families, identifying and addressing obstacles to care progression. Serve as a clinical resource for the multidisciplinary team by addressing clinical, process, and system improvement opportunities. Participate in organizational and departmental meetings, committees, and workgroups as necessary. Adhere to professional practice accountability and ethical principles regarding patient confidentiality and informed consent. Promote a collaborative work environment supporting the organization’s mission, values, and pillars. Qualifications

Successful completion of an approved Physician Assistant program accredited by the AMA Council on Medical Education. Physician Assistant License. National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. BLS AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification. Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (preferred). Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms. Obstetrics/Women’s Health experience required. HMH is committed to pay equity and transparency for our team members. The posted rate of pay is a reasonable estimate of the minimum base pay for this role at the time of posting, in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act. The base compensation determined at the time of offer may vary based on experience, education, location, and internal equity. Labor Market Data: Compensation is benchmarked against market data. Experience: Years of relevant work experience. Education and Certifications: Level of education and specialized certifications. Skills: Demonstrated proficiency in relevant skills and competencies. Geographic Location: Cost of living and market rates. Internal Equity: Consistency with similar roles within the organization. Budget and Grant Funding: Departmental budgets and any grant funding may impact the pay that can be offered. In addition to our compensation for full‑time and part‑time job positions, HMH offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, vision, paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and retirement benefits. Minimum annual rate: $148,803.20.
