Overview The Labor and Delivery Physician Assistant assists, monitors, and manages the day‑to‑day needs of patients as requested by, in conjunction with, and under the supervision of a physician. Performs the duties and responsibilities of a Physician Assistant according to customary and generally accepted medical standards. Obstetric/Women's Health experience required for this position.
Key Responsibilities
Evaluate and triage patients presenting to Labor & Delivery.
Perform comprehensive history and physical examination and develop initial management plans in collaboration with the resident and attending physician.
Interpret fetal heart rate tracings and communicate findings to the care team.
Manage uncomplicated laboring patients, including performing cervical examinations, ordering appropriate medications and providing patient education and support.
Perform procedures within scope of practice.
Serve as first‑assistant in C‑sections and other obstetric surgical procedures when residents are in protected time.
Assist attending physicians and residents with vaginal deliveries.
Manage immediate postpartum period—assess for hemorrhage and urinary retention.
Conduct postpartum rounds, managing common post‑partum issues.
Provide comprehensive patient education on postpartum recovery and contraception.
Facilitate patient discharges, ensuring prescriptions, follow‑up appointments, instructions, discharge summaries, and reconciliations are completed.
Serve as continuous clinical resource for nursing staff and residents, orienting new team members to unit protocols.
Ensure seamless handoffs and communication during shift changes.
Participate in daily team huddles, rounds, and department meetings.
Detailed Responsibilities
Provide medical services under the supervision of a licensed physician, consistent with the PA's education, training and experience.
Perform and document accurate, complete, and relevant history and physical assessments appropriate for the patient's age, gender, and clinical problem.
Order, perform, and interpret laboratory tests, diagnostic studies, and procedures in collaboration with physicians and consultants as appropriate.
Manage general medical and surgical conditions based on comprehensive knowledge of etiologies, risk factors, pathophysiology, and indications and contraindications of pharmacologic agents and other treatment modalities.
Prescribe medication safely and effectively in accordance with best practices, hospital policy, and New Jersey regulations, providing patient education as needed.
Seek opportunities to promote Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) PA practice recognition (locally, nationally, and internationally) through conferences, publications, and presentations.
Provide care that is patient‑ and family‑centered, compassionate, and effective for the promotion of health and treatment of disease.
Practice as a healthcare provider according to the rules and regulations of the Medical Staff and bylaws as outlined in the delineation of privileges.
Apply evidence‑based and value‑based medicine to systematically analyze and improve patient care practices and outcomes.
Evaluate patient/family transition of care planning, considering resource utilization, cost, quality, safety, and self‑management promotion for chronic conditions.
Demonstrate clinical expertise through advanced assessment and procedural skills pertinent to the practice specialty.
Translate “best practice” into clinical practice by evaluating current protocols and standards of care.
Provide culturally sensitive and educationally appropriate health management education to patients and families.
Facilitate consistent, coordinated care and clear communication among all members of the healthcare team through participation in daily interdisciplinary rounds.
Serve as an advocate for patients and families, identifying and addressing obstacles to care progression and escalating issues as appropriate.
Serve as a clinical resource for the multidisciplinary team by addressing clinical, process, and system improvement opportunities.
Participate in organizational and departmental meetings, committees, and workgroups as necessary.
Demonstrate the highest level of accountability for professional practice and adhere to ethical principles regarding patient confidentiality, informed consent, and adverse outcomes.
Promote a collaborative work environment supporting the organizational mission, behavior expectations, values, and pillars.
Mentor other PAs, precept students in PA programs, and participate in educational programs as a clinical expert.
Identify patient/family educational needs and collaborate to implement appropriate teaching materials.
Promote innovation by integrating new clinical knowledge into practice.
Participate in clinical research activities and disseminate findings through practice, education, presentations, and publications.
Identify ethical care issues and coordinate interdisciplinary meetings to resolve them.
Comply with HMH and department‑specific scope of services, policies and procedures as applicable to role.
Adhere to all HMH infection control and safety policies.
Perform other duties and/or projects as assigned.
Adhere to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications
Successful completion of an approved physician's assistant program, accredited by the AMA Council on Medical Education.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Obstetric/Women's Health experience.
Physician Assistant License.
National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Preferred Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
Compensation Minimum annual rate: $74,401.60.

Job Duties Some jobs may also be eligible for performance‑based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
