Overview

Head Nurse (Substitute) – Regional substitute head nurse positions for the 2025-2026 school year. Intermittent, on an as-needed basis. Location: Connecticut (Bridgeport, Danbury, Groton, Hartford, Killingly, Manchester, Meriden, Middletown, Milford, New Britain, Norwich, Stamford, Windham). Salary: $43.68 - $57.78 per hour (salary commensurate with education and/or experience). Responsibilities

Provide backup coverage when the Head Nurse is absent and assume all Head Nurse duties. Roles supported by Supervising Nurse, regional Float Nurse, school Administrators, and onsite school-based health centers at some locations. Follow the nursing process, plan unit workflow, assign and supervise staff, and participate in performance evaluations. Lead professional and paraprofessional nursing staff in provision of individual care; maintain standards of nursing; ensure proper storage, administration, and ordering of controlled drugs. Identify staff development needs and provide staff training and assistance; instruct staff on policies and procedures; participate in interdisciplinary meetings for care program continuity; respond to emergencies; may prepare reports or correspondence; may serve as QIDP. Direct care: independently develop, implement, and evaluate nursing/health care plans; provide nursing consultations; conduct nursing assessments; manage admissions/discharges and ongoing care plans; maintain records and ensure compliance with ICF and JCAHO standards; manage medications and therapeutic services; participate in therapy and interdisciplinary teams; may travel for duties. School Nurse duties: provide counseling and health education to students and staff; crisis intervention team member; assess medical problems; determine care needs; perform basic evaluations and first aid; maintain medical records; may administer medications and tests; referrals and follow-up on health needs. Participate in home visits or crisis intervention as applicable; provide in-service training to nursing staff; conduct conferences with nursing personnel as needed. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - General Experience: Two (2) years of experience as a Registered Nurse. Minimum Qualifications - Substitutions Allowed: A Bachelor’s degree in nursing may substitute for one year of general experience. Preferred Qualifications: Experience as a School Nurse in a high school or with adolescents; experience in behavioral health; experience on crisis teams or health/safety/student assistance teams; experience making referrals and following up on health needs; experience maintaining accurate health records. Special Requirements: Possession and maintenance of a Connecticut RN license; fluency in another language or ASL in certain positions; occasional travel may be required. Character/General Requirements: Background check and suitability investigations may be conducted; lifting or restraining individuals and exposure to health risks may occur.
