Position Summary We are seeking a detail‑oriented and highly organized Sales Tax Accountant to manage and oversee all aspects of sales and use tax compliance across multiple states. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely preparation, filing, and payment of sales tax returns, maintaining compliance with evolving state tax regulations, and assisting with audits and reconciliations. The ideal candidate is analytical, proactive, and experienced in multi‑jurisdictional tax filings.
Key Responsibilities
Sales Tax Compliance: Prepare and file sales and use tax returns for multiple states and jurisdictions in accordance with deadlines.
Tax Calculation & Reconciliation: Reconcile sales tax collected versus tax owed, ensuring accuracy in reporting. Investigate and resolve any discrepancies.
State Registrations & Nexus Tracking: Manage state tax registrations and monitor business activities for nexus triggers in new jurisdictions. Ensure compliance with local tax laws.
Audit Support: Assist with sales tax audits and inquiries from state and local taxing authorities. Gather supporting documentation and respond to requests.
Systems Management: Maintain and update sales tax codes in accounting systems or integrated tax platforms (e.g., Avalara, TaxJar, Vertex). Ensure proper tax mapping across systems and departments.
Process Documentation: Develop and maintain standard operating procedures for tax filing processes. Recommend improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy.
Cross‑Department Collaboration: Work closely with Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and Operations to ensure tax is properly assessed and collected on all taxable transactions.
Preferred Traits
CPA or pursuing CPA is a plus
Experience with e‑commerce or companies operating in multiple states
Familiarity with international VAT compliance is a plus but not required
Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines simultaneously
Clear communicator with a proactive mindset

Requirements Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred
3+ years of experience in sales and use tax accounting, preferably across multiple states
Strong understanding of sales tax nexus, exemption certificates, and state‑specific filing requirements
Experience with sales tax software or ERP systems
High attention to detail and accuracy
Strong Excel skills and ability to work with large data sets
Excellent organizational and time management skills
