Position Description The Kinesiology Department at San José State University announces a search for an Assistant Professor: Exercise Physiology beginning in August 2026. Candidates are encouraged to have specializations in strength and conditioning, applied exercise physiology, physiological assessments, exercise testing, and programming. Specializations in artificial intelligence, health technology, and/or health equity are also encouraged.

The Department of Kinesiology is committed to preparing students to be agents of change who understand cutting‑edge technologies and the importance of equity and diversity. The department offers coursework in motor learning, motor development, sport psychology, exercise physiology, biomechanics, sport history, sport philosophy, sport sociology, teacher education, adapted physical activity, measurement and evaluation, and other kinesiology fields. It also offers a robust activity program with over 40 activity classes. Candidates will join a dynamic and collegial faculty, engaging in research, scholarship, and creative activities, and teaching practices that lead to student success.

Required Qualifications

Earned Ph.D. in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Human Performance, Strength and Conditioning, Sports Science, or related discipline from an accredited institution. Doctorate must be conferred before the start date.

Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and graduate classes in Exercise Physiology, including Strength and Conditioning, Physiological Assessment, and ECG Interpretation and Exercise Testing. Ability and desire to serve on thesis committees, supervise theses/projects, and advise in both graduate and undergraduate programs.

Experience working with laboratory equipment (e.g., metabolic carts, ECGs, isokinetic dynamometers, medical BIA instruments, Biodex balance system, hydrostatic weighing tank, accelerometers, skinfold calipers, spirometers, lactate analyzers).

Record of publications or strong potential for publications and external funding. Expertise in health technology and/or artificial intelligence as it relates to exercise physiology and health equity.

Applicants should demonstrate awareness and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population, as might have been gained in cross‑cultural study, training, teaching, and comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or ACSM Exercise Physiologist (ACSM‑EP), ACSM Clinical Exercise Physiologist (ACSM‑CEP), or membership in ACSM and/or NSCA.

Interest in working with the Sport and Fitness Evaluation program, which offers fitness assessments to the community on a fee‑for‑service basis.

A comprehensive understanding of kinesiology as an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary endeavor, enthusiasm to work in a multidisciplinary department.

Key Responsibilities

Teach exercise physiology courses at undergraduate and graduate levels, supervise theses/projects, serve on thesis committees, and advise students at both levels. May also be expected to teach in other areas of the major, general education, or activity programs.

Conduct research, seek external funding where appropriate, present professional papers, and publish in professional journals.

Participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.

Organize classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).

Demonstrate awareness and experience in meeting the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.

Other Duties All San José State University employees are mandated reporters under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and required to comply with CSU Executive Order 1083.
