The Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (HHI) is an interfaculty initiative with the mission to advance the science and practice of humanitarian response worldwide through research and education. Founded in 2005 and based in the Department of Global Health and Population at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, HHI serves as the humanitarian arm of Harvard University and brings an interdisciplinary approach to building the evidence base of humanitarian studies and professionalizing the field of humanitarian aid.

As a core member of our web development staff, the Back End Developer will have a crucial role in implementing new software features under a tight development schedule. The Back End Developer is a member of a small, dynamic, and highly motivated team tasked with design, implementation, quality assurance, and user acceptance testing in a continuous integration process, and will be responsible for building applications that exhibit superior reliability, robustness, and performance.

This is a hands‑on web development role, and requires the implementation of a system using Python/Django, Docker, AWS, PostgreSQL (among other platforms) and using best practice continuous integration tools. A successful candidate will possess a broad knowledge of open source development practices. This individual will also thrive in a collaborative and team‑oriented environment, have an interest in the work conducted by HHI (particularly survey work in difficult environments), and have a desire to acquire and apply new skills.

Additional duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Designing, testing, documenting, and implementing new application components within a team of developers

Independently investigating, identifying and correcting defects in existing code bases

Maintaining Docker configuration, systems administration and code deployment

Compiling and making minor changes to front‑end scripts and stylesheets using tools such as npm and webpack

Participating in code reviews and revising own code in response to feedback from other developers

Participating in meetings and other coordination activities with the team

PLEASE NOTE: This position has a term end date of one year from date of hire, with possibility for extension.

PLEASE NOTE: Short‑listed candidates may be required to submit a past/existing Python work sample.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in computer science, computer engineering, information technology, or related required

3+ years of related work experience required

Python experience required

Additional Qualifications

Understanding of Django and its ORM preferred

Understanding of REST API principles; experience with Django REST Framework preferred

Working knowledge of Docker as a development environment preferred

Basic familiarity with PostgreSQL and MongoDB preferred

Experience compiling and making minor changes to front‑end scripts and stylesheets using tools such as npm and webpack preferred

Interest in and willingness to learn Linux systems administration preferred

Experience with humanitarian data collection preferred

Experience with front‑end technologies such as ECMAScript 2015 (ES6), React, Redux, and SCSS preferred

Familiarity with Node.js and Redis preferred

Language skill to assist with internationalization preferred

Experience working with limited supervision preferred

Experience communicating effectively with non‑technical users preferred

Experience working in a fast‑paced environment with shifting priorities preferred
