KoBoToolbox at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative

KoBoToolbox, developed by the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, is a state‑of‑the‑art open source suite of tools for data collection and analysis in humanitarian emergencies and other challenging environments. HHI’s mission is to relieve human suffering in war and disaster by advancing the science and practice of humanitarian response worldwide.

As a result of the strong demand by the humanitarian community for our tools and expertise, we are expanding our team. We are urgently seeking a Python Developer to support the implementation of a significant new phase of our KoBo software suite that is conducted in coordination with the United Nations and the International Rescue Committee. As a core member of our development staff, the individual will have a senior role in implementing an exciting new software infrastructure under a tight development schedule. The Python/Django Developer is responsible for building applications that exhibit superior reliability, robustness, and performance. The individual will be part of a small, dynamic, and highly motivated team tasked with design, implementation, quality assurance, and user acceptance testing in a continuous integration process.

Location

Applicants must be based in the greater Boston area.

Position is full‑time or part‑time based out of HHI’s Cambridge office.

Required Skills

2+ years of professional software development.

Experience with Python.

Proven track record for problem‑solving and delivering high‑quality software.

Experience with iterative and test‑driven development practices.

Additional Skills

Experience with Django – a strong plus.

Experience with database design and administration.

Experience with GIT and open‑source development.

Experience with HTML5, JSON, and CSS.

Experience developing in a continuous integration environment using source code control, automated testing, and build automation.

Experience with agile development practices.

Experience working in multi‑location teams.

Experience and/or interest in working in humanitarian action, human rights, or economic development – a plus.

Responsibilities

Design, code, and test application components within a team of developers.

Participate in code reviews for components produced by project teams.

Demonstrate flexibility by acquiring new skills and taking on new tasks.

Work effectively on project teams using agile development practices.

Compensation

Position is full‑time or part‑time.

Fees are commensurate with experience.

All positions are sub‑contractor contracts only. Later employment for KoBoToolbox at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative is a possibility, but is not guaranteed.
